Area 51 satellite images

I've already looked at Area 51 in Google Maps and World Wind.

Google Maps were a much higher resolution, though.

Do people really not know what those green circles are? Those are literal crop circles. The watering is done with a sprinkleer system that is on wheels that rol around a central axis watering the field. Thus only a circular area cacn be watered.

I believe those craters are part of the missle and bombing range for the air-force. mapblast labels this area as the "Nevada test site".

The bunkers and building around them are "fake" structures used for target-practice.

(my 2 cents; I could be wrong).

BTW, the map and sattelite feature is simply amazing... I was snooping around all the air-force and naval bases and saw aircraft carriers, SR-71s, helis, etc..

...and of course the air-force graveyard in Tucson.... That is fucking unbelievable! so many jets, so many missles, so many bombs... oh....

And, in which direction, and how, is that air-force graveyard? I know what it is, and I've seen shots of it, but I just don't know WHERE it is. :P

OMFG, the airplane graveyard is amazing. I had no idea how many planes we had just laying around. What I want to know is why are some randomly arranged while most are in order?

The graveyard is estimated at $50 to $100 billion dollars worth of planes and armaments. Be sure to locate the rows of bombs and missles, they are just tiny lines!

Wow. They all look intact. Wonder why they are not flying. There is enough for an entire airforce for another country.

Yeah, if you fly over the midwest you'll see thousands of those damn things. They look cool though.

This Google maps thing is pretty damn cool though. I actually checked out the two aircraft carriers that are right next to where I work. It's pretty amazing.

I don't understand what the big deal is about the area 51 satellite photos though. It's not like they have top secret stuff just sitting outside. Yeah, you can see buildings that look like every other building on the planet.

Good god. You could build more complete working military planes from that graveyard than there are in the entire Australian military. Hell, a single US aircraft carrier carries more planes than there are in the Australian military. I think we have something like 10 helecopters.

Is this a static map or does it refresh every so often. Or is it (relatively) live?

As for the Tucson thing (is it also referred to as 'The Bone Yard'??) I have a high resolution 4000-something square bitmap satellite image of that. It's not quite such a big area, but you can see it in really quite impressive detail [grin]. I had it as my windows wallpaper for a while. If only I had webspace I'd upload it for you all...

They were talking to someone from Google on NPR about this the other day and they said that this data will get updated as new publicly available satellite becomes available. Since they only draw from free images that's why some area are very high res and others are pretty crappy.

What I want to know is why only North America?

big farms have sprinkler systems on wheels that go in a circle... i doubt that's what those green things are though...

I'd imagine its a problem of both logistics and availability.

You can get some very similar imagery on MultiMap for the UK based on the "Snapshot of the millenium" project (or whatever its name was). I'd guess that much of the world doesn't have a decent source of publicly available satellite imagery...

However, in the long run - from Google - I expect nothing less than them satellite indexing the entire world [smile]
