Just broused over to NeHe's site to read some news, as I havn't visited over there in quite some time. I read on his blog that he is in some tough financial straits and wants to sell the site. That's really sad since I think Nehe has the best OpenGL site around, and has done more for the OGL community than anyone that I can think of. So, does anyone here know how NeHe is doing? Anyone talk to him? Just curious, as he's a real nice guy who just had had about 5 years of really shitty luck. Roach

We should all donate something to him

It's on the main page of his site. In the upper right part of the page.

I felt really bad when i read what he has gone through over the past .. well years .. His site is probably the best for OpenGL beginners and what got me into game develloping in the first place. I hope he'll bounce back from this - somebody who has done so much for the gamedev community shouldn't be struck with so much bad luck.

Does anyone here read the NeHe forum? [wink] Posts here and here on this. Best of luck to NeHe! I hope he pulls though.

I second that. I try to have a lot of respect for those people who teach others.

The last thing I would want to see happen to NeHe's content is something like http://www.gametutorials.com/.

I have to say, that is some snazzy flash. I wish I could do that.

I just realised I should explain the link for those who don't know (or can't get past the flash). It's a tutorial site with previously-free tutorials. Now it has really bad flash and you have to pay to buy the tutorials.

I love how they list their half-page code examples as 'products'. Even calling them tutorials was going a bit far but thats just silly.

Incidentally, if NeHe wasn't paying for hosting where did his debts come from?

Oh my God, you have to pay for *all* of the tutorials there now, last time I visited that place a) It wasn't flash and b) You didn't have to pay for all bar about 5 tutorials. Those tutorials aren't even good.
If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.

No idea, but it can be school, house, medical expenses, and so on.

I belive its called living [grin]

I've got just a minor query about this... now, ok, the orignal tutorials and code which he wrote he has every right to sell the copyright for if he wants, however there are tutorials and articles which others wrote as well as ports of the code which he doesnt own (unless the authors signed the rights over) as such he cant sell it without the copyright holders permission doing otherwise would be a tad...well, dishonest...

I'm sorry, but we can only take your query in the form of a question...

But he can sell them as a collection (like, for example, selling a database of e-mail addresses).

I dont think so, for one thing an email address isnt a copyrighted entity where as someones article/code port is, so unless he has permission to resell it I dont think you'll find he is allowed to.

Normally, the sites have some sort of clause like: "If you submit an article, sample, etc. you give the site owner the permission to do whatever with your code, but you still retain copyright over it"

It'd be good if we could get together enough people to all donate a bit to a common pool and then buy out the comment and hand it over to GDNet or something, but I don't think we'd be able to raise enough to make a serious bid.

I was already intending to make a donation to the site before this, I think I might increase the amount a bit now - those tutorials were great for getting started with OGL.

Getting Paypal hooked up is a pain in the butt though, I also want it so I can get GDNet+, I think I might have to get myself a credit card just so to speed up the process.
