GDNet Firefox Extension 0.4 (Ported to Firefox 1.5 and now 2.0) (Update #2)

GDE (Works with 1.5 and 2.0) | Auto-Install Link Note: If you have already installed a previous version it might be a good idea to uninstall it first and restart firefox before trying to install the newer one.

Update #2: Works fine with the new FireFox 2.0 but if you do find any issues let me know.

Update #1: Firstly, for those of you who live in journal land, the rating bar thing has been extended to work there [smile] I have also removed the need for the "GDE: Refresh Rating Data" entry in the tools menu, as the script will now call that itself instead of just alerting the user that the "ratingCache has no properties". I have changed all label's etc to use the locale "en-US". So in theory it should be possible to translate bits of it into other languages for the non-english speaking gamedev users and add those locales. Yes, this is completely pointless and I did it more for my own learning purposes than to add any real functionality [grin] Lastly, I am trying to get it to run in mozilla 1.7, it isn't working as of yet but maybe that will be sorted in any further updates [smile]

A few days ago there was a firefox update and I thought ...I wonder if anyone ever ported my favourite extension to firefox 1.5. A quick look around and I couldn't find if anyone had. Soooo ....I did it myself [grin] 99.9% of the code is still C-Junkie's (and it is very well written in my opinion). I tidied it up a bit, changed some bits and bobs that were no longer valid in the newer firefox and added one tiny bit of functionality [smile] The added functionality is ...the smilies/paste context menu should now work for private messages. The extension has only been tested on one machine (My own running xp pro sp2 and the latest firefox 1.5.0.2) so I have no idea how it will perform on other machines. If there are any problems let me know.

Hey, great job. I had started this myself, but never got a lot done on getting what was there working properly, so it didn't get far. This seems to be next to perfect however. Sweet work.

Yea it was pretty frustrating at times. &#106avascript is a horrible scripting language in my opinion. Combine this with the multitude of poorly written &#106avascript out there on the net, that always seems to fill the first 20 hits on google, and the fact that so many of the hits also contain IE specific &#106avascript ...it was quite the headache [flaming] I would be semi-willing to add features to the extension at request, but I think i'd only want to add ones that I myself would use [smile] I'm also very glad to hear it is working on other people's machines [cool]

Good job mate.

I ge tthe rating cache thing also, but the rating actually works. A bit of an annoying dialog either way. Is there anything you can do about that ViLiO?

That's nice! FireFox extensions are (only?) written in &#106avascript correct? I'm just wondering, since, when I researched on that, that's what I read.

If you look under the tools menu, there is a "GDE: Refresh rating data". If you click that your "users you have rated" page is loaded into a hidden window, parsed and the details stored in a txt file in your firefox cache. This is then used by the extension to do the funky bold style thing on the rating bar. [smile]

Take this with a pinch of salt though as I stress this is the work of C-Junkie ...all I did was fart around with the few bugs that got introduced with the more strict compliance to &#106avascript standards that firefox 1.5 has. [wink]

There is a xml style language used for overlays, dialogs, etc. which has the .xul extension. This allows you to put your own entries in the menus and other cool things (...like about boxes and options dialogs). The &#106avascript stuff is basically like going to somebody elses site, and injecting your own &#106avascript into it (it doesnt have to be used for this but that is what this extension does) and you can then update the new overlays or dialogs you created from that injected script. I basically read <a href="http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Building_an_Extension">this</a>, C-Junkie's code (which is all inside the xpi/zip file in plain text) and a couple of other extensions that were the most popular downloads on the firefox extensions page. Nicely done, I was worried it was going to die with the disappearance of C-Junkie. PnP Bios had a neat extension going as well if I remember correctly.

I talk to PnP IRL from time to time. No, he said he has no interest in developing firefox extensions. He's to busy working with .NET and revising and updating his cornerstone tutorials. The newest version of hxRender is realy nice too.

Oh, and is there ever going to be a lastread extension? That would be flippin sweet.
