I need a (different) game

I've been doing without any steady games for a long while now, and I'm looking for something that fits my style (something few pc games do these days). To put it simply, I like games that are somewhat arcadey in that they don't require the kind of fast but careful thought that RTS games do, but aren't literally mindless or nothing but tedius repition like MMOs. A few good examples of games I liked are the Incredible Machines (and sequals), Tyrian(multiplayer wasn't great, but it existed at least), and Diablo 1 (2 was ok, but 1 was great). I'd prefer something closer to one of the latter two since puzzle games generally don't lend well to multiplayer, which is something that's rather important (preferrably as coop). I don't care at all about graphics technology, but I'd appreciate it if suggestions at least support as high as 800*600 (nothing so old as mode X or 640*480 =-) and run unaided on windows XP. Free is good, cheap is ok, and standard commercial-priced games are acceptable if they're awesome =-) No subscription services need apply. [Edited by - Extrarius on May 21, 2006 6:52:44 PM]

You liked Diablo?

Try Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and Planescape: Torment.

They make Diablo look like a kindergarten exercise.

Those aren't anything whatsoever like Diablo.

Try Divine Divinity(it also has an expansion: Beyond Divinity or Sacred Gold.

On a very, very superficial level they are.

and all are isometric.

Okay, get a big bag and go to the computer games store. Ready?

Dump into your bag the following "RPGs":
  1. Anything made by Troika (Vampire: Bloodlines, Arcanum)

  2. Anything with "Fallout" in the title (except for Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel)

  3. Anything by Black Isle

  4. Anything by Bioware

  5. Arx Fatalis

  6. Deus Ex (but not Invisible War)

  7. System Shock 1, 2

That's all I can think of right now that would still be on shelves. You should probably also pick up the Bethesda games -- Morrowind and Oblivion -- if your computer can take them.

You should probably also go pick up a copy of Flatspace II, and Weird Worlds. Introversion is coming out with their latest, Defcon, so look to see if it's something you'd like to play.

If you liked Diablo, I'd reccomend checking out Nox. I'm not sure if you can find it these days, I've seen it in a budget bin once and a while.

It's essentially an RPG with very arcadey combat, a pretty interesting storyline and some cool line of sight effects. It's not too long of a game, but it has good replay value as playing through as a different class gives you an entirely different toolset to work with, as well as each class takes a different path through the game; so if you play as a different class you get to see/do different things.

Edit: This is from Wikipedia
Quote:

The game Nox is placed in a typical medieval fantasy world full of monsters, warfare, and insanity. However, the game's concept is that the player character, Jack, is not a native inhabitant of this world but rather a modern Earth trailer park denizen. Jack is pulled through a portal in space opened up by Hecubah, the evil Queen of Necromancers. She wants the Orb, a mantelpiece decoration belonging to Jack.

Jack lands in an Airship flying above Nox. The Airship is owned by the Airship Captain, an important character in the story. Jack finds that he is destined to become a great hero in this strange land, according to the Airship Captain. The three character classes that are available to the player are the Wizard, Conjurer, and Warrior. In a twist on the remotely similar Diablo series, each class has its own divergent game layout, with each player class "path" representing a different series of missions and levels.

Nox uses a fluid isometric viewpoint.

While some of those are certainly decent games, none of them are what I'm looking for right now =-/ FPS, RPG, etc are all nice sometimes, but I'm looking for something else right now. While some might call diablo an RPG, it's just action adventure with a story, stats, and items, which isn't the same thing as an RPG.
A few more games in the style I'm looking for now would be Zelda LttP, Crimson Land, Solstice, and Cannon Fodder.

I hate to recommend it, but... if you liked the multi-player Diablo stuff, you'd probably like Guild Wars...

What did you like about Diablo? The grinding? The random dungeons? The multiplayer co-op? The loot gathering?

Guild Wars wasn't _too_ bad, but it got old very fast. Also, while I like multiplayer, I don't like mmo or pseudo-mmo and I do like being able to play by myself when I want (henchman in guild wars just don't make a usable party)

No idea, but diablo definitely didn't have the same feel to it that modern games do. The grinding obviously was just that, but it didn't feel nearly so boring as most games make it. The random dungeons helped somewhat with that, but diablo 2 also had random levels without quite the same feel to the game, so it had to be other things also.

Have you ever played little big adventure? It's rather old now but it's a rather unique game (I've never seen anything else like it really) and I'd say it falls into the adventure game category. You may have trouble running it on XP though (I think LBA2 works alright if you get an unofficial patch but the original probably doesn't unless you can emulate it with dosbox or something).

If you have a PSX/PS2, get Alundra.
srsly.
Alundra == 32 bit LttP

an good action/dungeon crawl game with an assload of grinding is Dark Cloud 2 for the PS2.

You might want to try Darwinia. There's a free demo available through Steam.

[...]why hasn't this been said yet?
Because it's a DnD-based RPG that has nothing in common with any of the styles or games I mentioned.

I recently played the demo of Titan Quest and quited enjoyed for a bit of hack and slash. Perhaps you could try that although not sure if the res goes down to 800 * 600.

If you're after something like Diablo, go for, well, Diablo. There are a handful clones, but none of them are half as good as Diablo.

If you insist on newer games though, try Dungeon Siege 1&2, or Titan Quest.
But seriously, you'd probably have more fun replaying Diablo for the 17th time.

Sniper elite is the coop game I ever played, but it doesnt really meet your other criteria.
