Team name: Key Cutter Game Dev Project name: Pet Wars Current Status:

Genre: Physics Based, creative Real Time Strategy Brief description: Utilize your environment. Soldiers aren't made in factories, and factories aren't made from gold. In pet wars you have to recruit your troops from within the warzone, and assemble your defenses and weapons from the stuff you find nearby. In the warzone animals wander about until you find them and persuade them to join your side. You have no defenses or weapons unless you venture out and collect some junk to use. Build your fortresses from sticks, bins, tyres and whatever you can get your paws on. Set traps for your enemy, co-ordinate arial conker attacks, let loose rocks from catapults made from bricks and planks. Pet wars delivers a fresh gameplay system for the RTS genre through Physics based Utilization of your environment.
Pet wars is like command and conquer with worms. Not in the sense that command and conquer's appetite has increased suspiciously, the intention is that it will be a game that is fun, untamable and clever. When things go wrong it should be funny and frustrating at the same time, when things go right it should be down to clever, often creative utilisation of the environment, handling pressure, making use of a wildcard item or animal, sometimes good co-ordination, or devilishly good trap laying, not just learning the ins and outs of the units and items.

I just wanted to throw in two cents about your game.

I think you should really go open ended with utelization of your environment. In other words, try and make it so that the players can come up with ways to use the environment that even you never thought of. I read somewhere of a game developer who was building a Dungeons and Dragons style Team RPG. There was a part where the game testers were on a quest to transport a magical chemical across a frozen wasteland. In the game, zero is the point at which water freezes, and any lower than -20 will kill you quickly. The magical chemical would be ignited by any flame, and would burn at -14 degrees, which made it useful as a tool in magical potions at a time when freezers and refrigerators didnt exist. The temperature along the journey was well below -20 and the game testers needed to figure out a way to stay alive. The testers tried building a fire, but the temperature and the winds were just much too cold to sustain a conventional fire. Much to the surprise of the game developers, the testers began taking out the magical chemical and some of it on fire on the ground. They figured out that although the chemical burned cold, it still burned at a temperature warm enough to keep them alive, albeit uncomfortable. The game testers settled down for the night by huddling down INSIDE of the fires. The game developers had never even thought of that possibility. (They thought the game testers were going to do what luke did in Star Wars on Hoth).

For that reason, I think if you can, you should really open end the physical properties of items in your game. I'll leave you to figure out the specifics since its your game. ;)

Thanks for the compliments Ian. Are you interested in contributing to the design? In particluar the story is very weak and needs to be rethought.
It goes for anyone in fact.

Looking out for at least one more 3D modeller/ designer.
This game is going to get made so your efforts won't be wasted.

Consider me, I'm a programmer with plenty of c++ networking experience.

This idea is excellent, fresh and uniquie. Every game would be different and the possibilities are endless. I would like to be involed with the design, storyboard and perhaps a 3d model in there somewhere??

I also know a buntch of diverse professionally trainned charector actors who would jump at the chance of supplying voices for the game: even if its only an old British Bulldog general screaming "CHARGE!!"

Also, we'd like to have a woman involved in the design, are there any women here who would like to join us?

At HKurban.

Do you have any idea where you read that, or what the name of the game was? Any game that is open ended enough to allow the player to sprinkle a portion of a quest item on the ground and light it to fend off the cold (all of this must be governed by the game rules rather than scripting, of course, because the developers didn't see it coming), or gut and sleep in a pack animal sounds like it would be amazing.

We are looking for one more modeler.
Its a good opportunity for an experienced game modeler to do something very different.

We have been up and running for around 3 months so getting started will be easy.

Its a royalty based pay scheme so this is still a hobby project to begin with, but we are putting all efforts into the first technical demo to secure funding during development.

If you would like more details or examples of our previous work please contact me on thelovegoose@gmail.com.

Cheers,

I am the lead artist of this team and we are looking for one or two more 3d artists. Some kind of experience is a must, you can't go in and not know what to do. At the other end you don't have to be a guru as well and this could be a wonderfull learning experience.

You need to be able to:
Model high poly models, not necessarily traditional, floating geometry is fine.
Make game res models with proper meshflow
Texture your models with diffuse/normal/full col. spec maps
Have a good sense of style and consistency

Rigging and animation optional

If you feel like this is something right for you, mail me or add me to msn, joris_hoogeboom AT hotmail.com

PMing might take a little longer for me to get to you.

What, this project is still alive ? Weird. Some time ago i was contacted to be a modeler in it, and when i agreed - all communication simply ceased. Now, thats an odd way to complete a project, wouldnt you say ?

Rather than ignore that last comment - understand it as crossed wires and that we don't want to be chasing people who don't reply.

Except there was nothing for me to reply to, you missed that little detail.

Another update - perhaps the one that will attract you!
One of our programmers has exploded, so we're looking for someone new to join us... and we're still looking for another modeler.
If youre interested, get in touch -

Pete

Hello, we've mopped up our exploded programmer, and have found a great new one. It has occurred to us though, that it wouldn't hurt to have another programmer if that programmer was a good one with lots to contribute.
If you are a knowledgeable, able programmer and currently between projects why not email me to see what we're doing- you might be really pleased you decided to!

Heres a couple of bits of concept art and a couple of screenshots of the infant game :

We've reached a major milestone - all production pipelines are in full swing, the core of the engine is complete and we're now on to the fun stuff.

This is a RTS, with a difference. Several very exciting differences.

Here are screenshots of the current release of the game:

More details, including details of the team and the design document can be found in the original post,

Just wanted to add something, being one of the music composers in the team.

It's realy been a joy working on this project, mainly because it is a complete paradox to find a team so committed to create a beautiful game. You must know how most of the indie groups are, most of them disbanding after the first week.

We're working with an open-minded strategy, wanting to create something unique out of nothing, reminding me the old motto "from gamers to gamers", which really suits this whole environment.

The idea and concepts are great and original, teamwork and individuality work together on this, every idea is heard (similar to Valve software where no clear roles are indicated) and perfectionism is a way of work, competing with a lack of real resources (as any indie developer would tell you)

Hope we find the people we need to speed up the development, people interested in working in projects that can achieve success.

Edit : Damn, Tybalt rules.
