Lunch time ideas

When I was in Australia, my lunch normally consisted of a trip to the local shop for either a pie and coke, a sausage roll and coke or a hamburger and coke. Now that I’m Toronto my lunch time menu is not quite as available as it used to be. Unfortunately the only thing I can think of for lunch is maybe some peanut butter sandwiches... So, GDnet folk, I’m wondering if any of you have some good and simple ideas of what to do for lunch that could be kept in a cupboard or cooked up quickly in a microwave? I can’t be the only one who eats lunch, so what do you all normally do to solve this problem?

If you have a fridge handy or someplace to get milk then cereal is always an option.

Seeing as I do not like to spend too much money I usually bring my lunch.

I find that corkscrew pasta is a good thing to have on hand. I put some kind of Salad Dressing on it and add in depending on what was previously eaten:

-Hot Dogs Cut up
-Tuna (Nice and Cheap)
-Cherry or Grape Tomatoes (Depending on if you want some vegetables)
-No meat (At times)

Additionally Tortillas with Refried Beans are a good option as they are cheap and taste quite good warm or cold.

Cup o' Soup is always a good choice as is Ramen.

Tomato Sandwhich - Tomato + Lettuce + Mayonaisse + Bread

Peanut Butter as you mentioned, when Necessary.

Rice Balls with some sort of meat or fruit in the center.

Then for secondary foods add things like Fruit Snacks, Fruit Cup or Apple Sauce, some manner of Drink and you should be good to go.

Yes. Just yes. Tuna, sweatcorn, and mayo mix. In a sandwich. Sprinkle of cheese mayhaps if you're feeling saucy. Dear god I love tuna...

Don't overlook dinner. I make dinner for two and then eat half for dinner and the other half for lunch.

Leftovers FTW.

Jinroh's suggestions are tried and true.

If you cook for yourself, you can make enough dinner to have left-overs for the next day or two.
If you like sandwiches, there's always the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but that gets a bit unhealthy after eating too many, too frequently. Change it up by getting some lunch meats and vegetables. I like to make toasted ham and cheese sandwiches:
1. Take two slices of bread and put them into the toaster.
2. Take a few slices of ham and put them into the microwave for about 10-15 seconds
3. Slice up some cheddar cheese
Time the cooking so that your toast pops up at the same time as your ham finishes cooking and you finish slicing the cheese. Then, take the hot ham and put it on your toast and add the cheese (which melts slightly). Eat it with a glass of cold milk :) super yummy! You might as well make two sandwiches though, because the first one will be so good you'll want another.

The more expensive options are to go eat lunch at restaurants. Don't do the fast food garbage, but try out the menu restaurants where you can get thai food, japanese food, chinese food, mexican food, seafood, italian food, etc.

Re: lunch -> soup

I make sure to keep a nice supply of Andersen's split pea soup and some boxes of Trisquets under my desk.

My favorite soup is the Campbell's Select soups, especially the one with ravioli in it. If you sprinkle a little bit of parmesean cheese on top after microwaving, it's makes a very tasty lunch. Very salty though, so it may not be the most healthy. But it sure is tasty.

If you have a sandwich toaster at work, get some Foccacia bread, a roast chicken and a cople of avocados, and you can premake Foccacia's for the week.

Generally my girlfriend makes her own lunch the night before, and has decided that it would be best for my wallet if she makes me lunch at the same time. Works for me.

Never ever take eating advice from Ra.

You're in Canada now. Drive to Quebec and grab some poutine. Toronto's poutine isn't up to par (but still probably a good meal).

Top it off with a donut from Tim Horton's.

Might seem like a pretty stereotypical meal, but that's probably because every Canadian stereotype is pretty much true. Especially the eh? thing. I say it a billion times a day.

As for lunches you can make yourself. I always like grabbing a baguette (whole wheat or white depending on your preference), some swiss cheese slices, and either your favourite lunch meat (I don't eat meat, but Yves brand veggie ham slices are pretty good...can't say the same about other veggie meat slices they make), or an assortment of vegetables and just make a nice baguette sandwich.

Toasting/grilling it is pretty excellent. Microwaving is a reasonable alternative (the meat and cheese one, not the veggie).

Sandwiches of any kind are good in my book.

If you like tacos, you can cook up some ground beef or chicken (or veggie ground beef in my case) and keep it in the fridge. Then just bring some to work (along with some tortillas) and microwave the stuff there.

I don't have too many other ideas other than just grabbing frozen dinners or Kraft Easy Mac (macaroni and cheese you can make in the microwave). I don't really like either of these options, but they're there.

Another thing to try is to make a really good dinner and bring leftovers for lunch.

Pfft. Pie and coke. A real Aussie lunch consists of vegemite spread on weetbix in a bowl of Carlton Draught. [grin]

Well from what I know... it IS possible to get Vegemite in Canada ;)

As for lunch ideas I'd agree with making too much for dinner. I've got a number of good Caserole and easy cooking recipes that I'll tend to make and then have fore leftovers. Depending on the meal you can actually get two lunches out of the leftovers =P

Costco occasionally offers microwave burritos, leave them in the fridge at work and toss one in the nuker so often. $10 for a four-pack.
