6 mm (0.24") thick ipod announced

I can't help but think of my slider phone that I accidentally cracked it's LCD a couple of months ago my having the thing in my pocket and sitting down wrong apparently. With these things getting so slim, I wonder how durable they are?

Here's Apple's spec sheets for it.

My co-workers have been discussing that, too.

Apparently the body is some kind of eco-friendly glass and plastic. It seems like it would be so easy to break.

I can only guess that they made it like credit-card plastic that can survive in a wallet for years without breaking. I don't know how they'd make the screen or internals durable that way.

Nope, not plastic. Their site says "Highly recyclable aluminum enclosure".

Most of the new Apple stuff is going to be aluminum and glass (with LED backlights instead of fluorescent ones); they're getting away from the plastic stuff. iPhones (and iPod touches, presumably) are already glass. I think the Macbook Air also has a glass covering, as does the iMac.

Dunno what the next revision of the Macbook is going to be like. I think the environmental benefit is nice (but of course the motherboards are still full of nasty stuff).

Is the headphone port on the new Nano still on the bottom? That was what pissed me off about previous revisions.

I don't own any Apple products yet (not even an iPod.) I still can't think of a reason to buy this.

The first generation was like sticking a small brick in your pocket. You couldn't just drop it in a t-shirt pocket, since it was heavy and big, and just barely fit on most shirts. If it did fit in the pocket, the whole shirt was dragged down on that side.

This one is pretty small and under two ounces, it can be dropped in a t-shirt pocket without a problem.

Incidentally, the headphone jack IS on the bottom, which is what I prefer when I drop it in my pocket. That way I only need to pull the device out a little bit to access the buttons.

Wow! That's almost smaller than a credit card (85.60 mm x 53.98 mm x 0.76 mm ISO 7810) but still not as thin.

I think that's some pretty impressive sounding battery life. The thing must be 90% battery, considering it's size.

I have an original ipod nano. I see no reason to upgrade. I can play music just fine with the gen 1 and it's small enough (It's already smaller than a credit card, just thicker).

At the time the iPod had the best user interface, but if my nano breaks I'll probably get a cheaper non-apple product. The other companies have simplified their interfaces enough now.

Are they sure that's what the users were waiting for? Who cares if it's 1cm or 6mm thick. I care much more about battery life, the ability to use it as standard USB device in any OS, the amount of storage, quality of the screen, ...

When will they marked the "longest battery life iPod yet"?

It's a decent feature for me. I'm thinking of getting an iPod, but all I really care about is the ability to play music (which is kind of a given for an MP3 player), and size so it's easy to carry. I still think the iPod Shuffle is more appropriate to my needs however.
