Updates: February 10. 2010

    Android support for JME3

  • While quietly building up to JME3's first alpha release, head architect Kirill Vainer drops the bomb:
Android support is coming in JME3!

  • Normen Hansen - New core programmer

Though yet to be officially announced, the JME team is happy to welcome a new member to our tight little core: Welcome, Normen Hansen!
Normen has already made great strides with a JBullet integration for JME2, soon to be incorporated in JME3. Furthermore, his pet project for JME these days involves a modified NetBeans distribution to achieve a complete Game Development Environment with JME (read: ease of use and accessibility)

  • Joomla!-powered backend

Much thanks to a kind contribution by Arunoda Susiripala, maker of JConnekt (Joomla! integration project), jmonkeyengine.com will soon be running Joomla! for its CMS backend. This move brings several exciting possibilities to the table, among them being single sign-on throughout the site and proper listing of project portals.

This looks like a great project!

I find it odd that in a forum where people find the time to flame every “make my mmo for me kid” that comes along, such a well organized and informative post is getting ignored.

Am I missing something here?

(...) Am I missing something here?
Oh, sorry to mislead you. Naturally, our end-goal (did I say end-goal? I meant goal for tomorrow, before lunch) is to use jMonkey to build the largest MMMORPRTSFPDSS ever conceived, let alone attempted. Did I mention there will be free handouts of preposterone and 7D glasses upon release day for a megamaximized experience of our rendering system which has been banned in 17 countries on the account of being 'too real'?

Oh and all jokes aside, thank you very much for the compliment, I spent a long time fine-tuning this ad.

To answer your question:

For starters, we are not asking for a 'beginner' or 'intermediate' developer here. We are a group of serious people who treasure the time we spend with this project. As it stands, 'coaching' someone into a position is out of the question.

Like in any other community built around a common subject, you'll find 999 'rookies' for every 'guru', because we all gotta start somewhere. Asking for this kind of competence and commitment immediately filters out the majority of regulars on this forum, effectively increasing our chances to find that one perfectly qualified, passionate guy who actually wants to work with a promising FOSS project even though he could easily be hired (or is) professionally.

The project doesn't fly or plunge with this one hire, the essential core is there already, hence we can afford to look for the Palos Verdes Blue when we could have just caught ourselves a couple Monarchs.

Really..a MMMORPRTSFPDSS?
Did I mention I’ve already designed all the magic spells for one of those? ;)

Ok..?? Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Real Time Strategy ????????? ok..I’m lost. I’ve never been good with acronyms.

Admittedly we got a little lost in the course of the design process, but I believe our target genre was:

Mega-Massively-Multiplayer-Online-RolePlaying-Real-Time-Strategy-First-Person-Driving-Simlike-Simulation

In actual news: We are encouraging suggestions for the ideal user submitted 'project portals'. Anyone interested in the subject is invited to join in to exchange thoughts.

Recent headlines of February through early March

JBullet physics integrated into jME3

Thanks to our newest core developer Normen, jME3 now sports integrated JBullet physics. JBullet is a pure Java port of the world's most popular open source physics engine Bullet Physics. In a later 2.0 version of this integration, Normen has high hopes for a native integration with Bullet Physics itself.

jME Game Development Environment: Preview!

Another great feat by our dear Normen. After just a couple weeks of what has certainly been fruitbearing labour, Normen was ready to show us some prototype functionality of his 'GDE' project. These are exciting times indeed!

jMonkeyEngine applies for Google Summer of Code 2010

2010 is going to be a big year for us; with GSoC participation it could be huge. By 12. March our project application will have been sent in and by the 18th we'll have our verdict. This is the first time we apply for GSoC so we don't know what to expect, but we really felt it was time to make ourselves more 'official', and figured this would be an excellent start.

If you have any ideas for jME features that a dedicated student could accomplish within 3 months time, please come by our dedicated board and share! Make sure your idea is not already listed though.

Roadmap for 'first alpha'

In light of our GSoC participation we've decided to release our first alpha earlier than planned. This doesn't mean much except there might be a couple extra alpha releases down the line before we start talking 'BETA'. Click the link above and feast on the long list of jME3 features already boxed in and kickin'. That's pretty much the one-man-army Kirill Vainer all by himself there ladies and gentlemen.., give him a hand!

More to come real soon, believe it or not ^^

Although yet to be announced, we just started the beginning of our website's front-end updates. We've finally applied Joomla! as our front page CMS, giving us all the control we could wish for. Check it out!

http://www.jmonkeyengine.com/

There are still a couple tweaks to be sorted out (sure wouldn't mind a dedicated web developer's helping hand) but we're getting there.

On the recruiting side we've got at least one prospective developer in our sights now, but there's nothing in the way of collaborations :)

Oh and in case you didn't notice in the quarterly report, Poisonville, the jME powered MMOG, has entered closed beta!

We are happy to announce that we are currently undergoing talks with several prospective Android developers! More about this later as the relationships develop and our development scheme for some months ahead becomes set in stone.

We are now looking for a capable 3D artist looking for a one-off opportunity to create a great, single piece of promotional material for the jMonkeyEngine 3.0 project.
