Good Old Games

I bought a few games off gog.com a few months ago. Was very pleased with the service; you get DRM free games and you also get wallpapers, game manuals, game soundtracks, etc. (depending on the game). Their library definitely lives up to their name.

I'm really impressed with how well a lot of the stuff was 'ported' (wrapped, I guess, is the better description). I didn't expect I76 to run at all, but whatever was done to it actually works on my Vista64 machine - nothing short of a miracle (granted, I'm running in software renderer instead of trying to screw around with a Glide wrapper or D3D).

It must be something more complicated than the usual vdmsound wrapper.

I've bought a few games at gog.com recently. The only one I've yet gotten around to playing is Phantasmagoria, which I used to play briefly before in ages past :) I'm impressed that these guys are using DosBox to get old games to run, they definitely put some care into it.

Another World and Oddworld are both works of genius. Buy both.

I love Good ol' Games. Steam is still my favorite way to purchase games, but GoG still gets the occasional purchase from me (I've bought 11 games from them so far, I joined about a year ago). I don't do any purchases except digital nowadays, and only through Steam and GoG.

I like it, because it gives me an oppurtunity to play all these games I've heard about, but was too young to catch the first time around, without the hassle of trying to get archaic executables running on Windows Vista/Windows 7.
For example, for the first time I've played Myst and Riven (thanks to GoG)... and loved them. I've also purchased RealMyst and Uru: Complete Chronicles, but haven't played them yet. For any RTS fans, I recommend Seven Kingdoms, which I greatly enjoyed.

I've been keeping a close eye on the site for a while, mostly hoping that some day they will put up Planescape: Torment. It's a fantastic idea nonetheless.

That's the first thing I looked for when I saw this thread. I've heard so much about it but I've never played it, I'll be keeping my eyes open.

They may not have PS:T yet, but they do have Arcanum, Fallout, and Fallout 2. Good times.

I bought a used copy of Planescape: Torment from Amazon a while ago because I was afraid it'd disappear. I just checked and they still have copies available.

I'll probably try realMyst from GoG this weekend. I recently tried installing Myst and Riven but both have problems on x64 Windows 7. Myst has odd performance problems when running inside a VM.

Myst and Riven both worked well for me on 32bit Windows 7, but RealMyst was having problems making it unplayable. You might ask the DosBox forums or the GoG forums, how to configure DosBox to get them working.

I'm hoping for some of the Wing Commander series, The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour. I'm loving Beyond Good and Evil so far! How did I miss this gem?!
