A change of pace for game ideas....

It seems like most of the games people want to make are copies of existing games. To me, this is so lame, and they actually think that it is the best game idea in the world. Sigh... Instead of being a copycat, why not make something interesting and new. Let me give you a pointer on brainstorming for an idea. Since we are making games for people, then people should exist in the main idea. Ok, here we go. 1. People like animals 2. People like dogs 3. Some dogs don''t have homes. 4. Dogs without homes are stray dogs. 5. Stray Dogs must find their own food and water. 6. Stray Dogs must find shelter. 7. Stray Dogs must avoid Dog Catchers. 8. Stray Dogs poop. 9. Stray Dogs have sex with other dogs. 10. Some people kill stray dogs. 11. Some stray dogs form packs. That isn''t much, but what a fresh new idea! Wow, that would be a great game. Let''s think of something else: 1. People go to school 2. People learn at school 3. People make friends at school 4. Schools have social groups 5. Some people join social groups 6. Some people make social groups 7. Some groups hate other groups 8. Some groups like other groups 9. Some students are not in social groups 10. Making friends in one group will make another group not like you Well, that isn''t bad. A game about school social groups would be quite interesting. Maybe you could create something that would allow one student to shoot all the other students. Wow, that would be free advertising. How many news stations would cover a game like that? I bet it would get on 20/20 or 60 minutes. It would probably be a good idea to leave that out though. You see how easy it is to come up with an idea that is somewhat original. Now take this knowledge and put it to use. The next time I find out someone''s great new idea is, "Make a game like Diablo 2 but with a different name" or "Make a game that is a 3d shooter and RPG combined like Deus Ex is", well, I am going to regurgitate my intestines through my nostrils.

It''s all been done, everything is a spin off of something else, or a cross between genres, etc.

Sidescroller, RTS, FPS, Sim

Chances are your game is going to fall into one or more of those categories, and the easiest way to describe a "new" concept is through previously established sources.

Of course it''s easy to come up with completely uninteresting ideas such as walking your dog, and I could still say it''s a knock off of The Sims.
