Am I reaching my monitor's limit?

Hi. I have an old 17" monitor from about 1998. The maximum resolution you can run at on it is 1280x1024. I usually run it at 1024x768, but I just felt like making 1280x1024 my New Year's Resolution. At this resolution though small things such as letters are not very sharp. They are kind of blury. I have heard that 1280x1024 is sort of a strange resolution. Is it the resolution that is strange or am I reaching my monitor's limit? Is it just that resolutions like these (i.e. 1280x1024, 1920x1440 -- not sure about the last two digits in the 19xx) are such odd-balls because they are usually the limit for monitors? It seems that monitors usually run at 800x600 if they are 14-15", 1024x768 if 17-19", and 1600x1200 if 21-22". Am I right, or extremely wrong? So does anyone know why 1280x1024 is such a strange resolution? Are the fonts just too small to be well-defined? Thanks. edit: Things also seem to be stretched horizontally too. 640/480 = 1.3333...
800/600 = 1.3333...
1024/768 = 1.3333...
1280/1024 = 1.25

Try 1280x960 to see if it looks better. However, maybe your monitor doesn''t like the higher resolution (lower refresh rates or whatever). FWIW, I run my 17" monitor at 1152x864.
Everything except 1024x768 just ''feels'' wrong for me...

You have just read a controversial statement by Valderman. Thank you for your tolerance.
