BeOS Game Dev

I would just like to ask if anyone here has tried the BeOS operating system? How do you feel it compares to Windows 9X? I''ve been using it for about two weeks and I like it but I dislike the fact that there are really no games for it. It seems to me that I may be the only person in the world that actually likes Microsoft! I''m not saying that from a business perspective they are right, but business is (when playing with the big boys anyway) kind of kill or be killed! Anyway... I think the Windows system is a good system. From a gaming perspective, it is powerful. I''ve read a lot of what make BeOS superior to Windows and other OSes on paper but when I get into the OS I don''t see that it is in any way better. It loads quicker but whos to say that isn''t because it just simply isn''t loading as much? I''ve played the Quake, Quake II and Doom ports and frankly, they are a joke in my opinion. None of them perform near as well as the Win9X versions. And the games I''ve seen for BeOS that are not "big name" games are well... I won''t even go there. Anyway, any opinions... write them. Thanks, Zaephen

Zaephen,

I have tried the BeOS, and I think I share the opinion that it just doesn''t stack up to Win 9x, if for no other reason than that there are not many software providers for it. It''s kinda like Mac stuff, a little- even though they are superior on paper and in some tangible ways, most people don''t want it because there aren''t as many products produced for Macs. BeOS is probably gonna die, or just stay small for an eternity. It was kind of fun to dink around with BeOS, but I eventually got rid of it because it wasn''t worth the system resources it used up.

Anyway, my $.02

Best Regards,
Torus

"Impressive!!!"
My gripe with BeOS isn''t really the lack of software but more the quality of it. Not second rate titles, I''m talking about Quake & Quake II. They DO NOT compare to their Win9X counter-parts. If the OS is as good as it appears on paper why doesn''t it reflect in these games? I expect the "lack of titles" problem from a somewhat "new" OS but top notch titles like these should be appealing I would think, they are not! It seems to me everyone wants to shoot Microsoft full of holes because of their inferior OS but it out performs the competition! I think people shoud instead focus on the true point of their problem with Microsoft, their business practices or whatever and not their (in my opinion) excellent OS.

Any thoughts?...

You know what? I''m a little lost, but from what I''m reading, I might agree with Zaephen.

Captured Reality.
Excelent compared to BeOS, maybe, ecelent compared to many other OSes, definitley not imho. BeOSes real problem is lack of drivers, then lack of software. It is very hard to find any drivers for BeOS if you dont have a brand name piece of HW, and annoyed the hell out of me, I couldn''t get my cable modem running.

I imagine that the games are probably performing poorly simply because of crappy drivers. Drivers can make a huge difference when it comes to performance.

(BTW, from a developers perspective BeOS is really neat to program on. Maybe that''s why I feel the need to defend it )
Hi all.

To all people who tested Quake, etc on BeOS: May be BeOS was not using harware acceleration, while Windows was?

We emphasize "gotoless" programming in this company, so constructs like "goto hell" are strictly forbidden.
