Looking for a game to mod

Hey everyone. I''m trying to learn as much as I can about game programming and someone suggested I look into modding an existing game. Im wondering what games out there can be seriously modded? Not just have levels made or stats tweaked, I''m looking for a full-fledged modifiable engine. What games out there have an engine I can get into the C++ and really get my hands dirty? I know the Quake source code is out there somewhere and I heard that Unreal (never played it) has a modifiable engine. I''m not a big fan of FPS games, so Quake isnt my first pick. Whats the best way to get started with something like this? I dont want to buy a game JUST for the purpose of modding it but I want to buy a game that can be modded, get it? Any help is appreciated

half-life has a very moddable engine, has a large community of developers, and has stood the test of time, mods are still made for it some 6 years after release
Neverwinter Nights comes to mind. I got my copy for $10 or $15.

Freespace 2 also (and it's open source), but it's hard to find a legal copy these days. For those about to mention The Underdogs, I said "legal".

You mentioned you don''t like FPS games, which would eliminate Half-Life and similar games. But what types of games DO you like?

Im a fan of strategy, action/adventure, puzzle, RPG.
I actually just played Unreal at a friend''s house and it wasnt bad so maybe I''ll give halflife a try. Any others, of course, would be welcome.

Anyone recommend any good sites that would have everything I''d need to get started modding (aside from the core game)?
A great game to mod that i have bee modding is either half-life or halo. Its great fun.

Tired of C++ and Java? Then try the new and improved Jaca++

Ive played an RPG mod for Halflife
Yeah, if you go with Half-Life or Unreal (or UT2K3/4) you can turn it into an RPG if you want. From what I''ve seen, they''re extremely moddable. Otherwise, I think NWN isn''t pretty extensible, though I don''t know if you really mod it or just make content.

I''ve decided to go with Unreal and just ordered my own copy. Thanks to you all for your help.
