Global Audio Manipulation

I've been having this buggin' my mind a bunch lately... I'm sure most of you heard of 5.1 channel headphones thats been popping up recently(Zalman's, Kinyo KY-100s, Medusa 3D, etc). Many people say they're a gimmick and what not, but they do have some potential. I personally have the Kinyo's, and the surround seperation have been good so far for the front and center channels, but the rear can be a bit more concise. Anyways, thats just leading to the main point. I've been thinking to program something that can manipulate the position and direction of each individual speaker on a virtual plane, then apply such settings globally throughout Windows (to DVD players, games, media players, etc). I am not really experienced in that sort of thing, though. You know, software that can apply settings globally through out Windows programs. I'm guessing it should be left running, but I have no clue for the rest. I also need to study on audio programming. I'm not sure if DirectAudio have any means for such virtual positioning and manipulation for each speaker. Any info would help a lot.
