What about an all voice interface for a game? With the advances in speech recognition and AI these days would it be possible to build an all voice interface to any type of game? Say an action game where you talk your avatar through a series of puzzles etcc.. What do ya think? -ddn

I think the big problem is that it would be too slow, even if your speech recognition was perfect. So that would limit it to basically the classic rpg, adventure game or puzzle game. And thinking about it, probably an RPG would be too input intensive, the player would wear out his throat. Imagine playing Final Fantasy, how many times would you have to say "attack the first goblin" or something similar. Also player movement would probably be a pain, even in something with restricted number of locations like seventh guest.

Bottom line, you should at least give an option for non-speech input as well.
bad idea. Not everyone would want to talk so much. Also what if your friends are watching you play and give you advice? Does the computer just follow their orders too?
I think it would work perfectly if you used voice recognition to command teammates, but only then if your voice recognition were really outstanding.

Can you imagine how much more exciting Unreal Tournament would be if you could just tell your teammates what to do, instead of using that stupid menu? "Hey, follow me." "Okay."

I think it''s something to consider.

GDNet+. It's only $5 a month. You know you want it.

[in response to the UT idea]

In multiplayer, that''s already done . You can get the MS Sidewinder Game Voice Share utility from their website.
In Singleplayer it''s a different story... Unfortunately, speech recognition is extremely CPU resource intense which makes it unusable in a fast paced game like an FPS or RTS or in fact every game that to some degree happens in realtime while using loads of processor power. I think it''s still easier to define keys on the keyboard or on an unused gamepad for such things as orders and taunts.

I think that will change if Game Voice becomes popular.

Well, for one, this might work perfectly for Multiplayer. But when you are talking in a single-player environment, it would be HELLUVA hard to try and write speech-recognition software that can understand EVERY possible slang, lingo, and accent in the local language. Or, you would have to use a standardized set of commands. How much fun would it be to sit at your computer, staring at beautiful 3D worlds, then having to say in a perfect monotone, "Open The Door." "Walk Forward" "Pick Up the Candle."???

State of the art speech recoginition can translate voice to text pretty well these days. Also even the old IF engines could handle mutiple commands embeded within a sentence. Newer AI engines can handle even more complex commands im sure. The real question is who will create such a game? Bring all the existing technology together ? Proably one of the more vangard companies like valve or square soft.

I say, do it!

If you need to go and buy a >1Gig processor and can afford it then even better. Make the break through that everyone is waiting for to prove that it can be done and done well. And if it can''t be done well then help the world to learn from your mistakes. Any new form of interface is a good idea in my opinion.
Considering the massive amount of trouble that the ex-world leader in speech technology is in at the moment, I think that''s a pretty good indication that Speech Technology is not really a mainstream thing.
It''s great for phone exchanges, and in some cases where you need your hands for other things, but nothing, NOTHING beats a keyboard when in a normal position to interact with your PC.

I have never been a believer in speech technology for the mainstream PC, and my unbelieving paid off in the end, when half of Belgium''s investors saw their hard-earned money go straight down the toilet when it was revealed just how Lernout and Hauspie managed to get such revenues.

People might not remember what you said, or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
