Think of your typical ''Woodcutter''. He lives in a log cabin in the forest, is a big, burly, hairy guy and often lives by himself. However, in this example, he lives with his wife. His house is situated in a small clearing, uphill from a small river, fed by glacial meltoff. They live by themselves, and only travel to a nearby village once a month for repairs and supplies. Anyway, would said Woodcutter normally have a dog? Say a Wolfhound or Mastiff to keep the forest denizens (wolves, bears, boars) at bay. Other than his axe, what weapons would he have at his disposal? Would he walk, or does he have a horse? Would his wife be able to keep chickens, or would they be too much of a temptation to wild animals?

He''d probably have a gun, the type of gun would depend on the time period and location... Bow and Arrow would probably be common as well. If he hunts his own food hed probably have a bloodhound. A dog won''t stand up against bears or wolf packs very well... You''d pretty much need a gun.

Probably would have a horse, unless he lives on steep mountains or something.

Chickens are allways a temptation for wild animals... Im not sure how people keep em out, but im sure you can find out online somehow.

Read some older books... like by Laura Ingles Wilder or something for more insight.
Chickens are a big favorite with the animals,
theres no keeping the omnivores away especially the small
and cunning ones like racoons.

A (male)goat is a much more powerful protector then a dog in this situation plus they double as livestock and garbage disposal.

A gander is also a valiant protector and is valuable in the
sense of alerting the humans with its obnoxious honking

...thats all from the farm

When Caffine said "He''d probably have a gun."

Was I the only one thinking that the next sentance was going to be: "probably a rocket launcher of some type."?

Sorry to distract from the subject, but this made me laugh
That''s okay, a bump''s a bump.

Due to the time period, the gun is out. Bow and arrow, yes. Sling? Crossbow?

I dunno ... I get this image of a guy running through the forest after a deer with a knife in hand and tackling it, before slicing it''s throat. Standing up in triumph, hands dripping with warm blood, he quickly skins and quarters it, before slipping it into a hessian sack and throwing it over his shoulders, he starts the trek back home, mindful of the watchful eyes of carrion eaters, peering from the undergrowth...

Sorry, got carried away. But I can''t see a real woodsman using anything but knives, sharp sticks and snares

Ah, I wasn''t going to mention this but I think it''s so funny. AI cock-up:

The woodsman is chopping wood out in front of the house. A troll comes out of the woods and roars. The woodcutter turns to face the troll, who runs at him. The woodcutter swings his axe at the troll, but it just brushes it aside. The woodcutter runs to a nearby tree and breaks off a large branch. He then swings this at the troll. The troll grabs it out of the air and looks at it. He makes a couple of test swings. And beats the woodcutter with it. The woodcutter is curled up on the ground against the vicious blows, but the troll stops... Then walks over to the tree, rips it out of the ground and holding it above his head, smashes it down on the woodcutter, killing him instantly. The troll sits down and starts eating the woodcutter. Now, the woodcutter''s wife comes outside with a crossbow. The troll, busy feeding, is oblivious to this, but becomes acutely aware for a split second as a crossbow bolt passes through his head.

Now...

The woodcutter''s wife sits down and starts eating the woodcutter!!!

I think I made a booboo.

wait, how''d the woodcutter get to the tree in time to grab the stick in the first place? aren''t brush-asides in the same class of actions as parrys, which are quick and even encourage a counter attack?

ohh, the troll must''ve wanted him to get the stick

kewl story! did u really implement that in ai? now THAT''d be involved; the troll realizing 1) that''s a weapon, 2) i can use that weapon, 3) i see where it came from, 4) i can get an even better one from there.

neat stuff.

In my country, hunters would have a bamboo cut out and the end would''ve been sharpened. Bamboo is used for it is flexible and will not crush an animal''s bone or break easily when you pull it out of the animal so it can be used again. A hunter would have a long bamboo pole say about 6ft long with a sharpened tip. Along with that he would have a small knife of some sort. He would then find a deer and throw the pole at it''s foot or body. This will stun the creature in a state of panic and confusion (face it, a deer or antelope can quite outrun an average man) sending it into a state of confusion the hunter then runs after the creature. With a 6ft pole in it, it will make the weight heavier and uneven therefore making it harder for the creature to move. When running, the weight will shift to and fro cuz of the flexing pole when it runs ultimately slowing it down and tiring it more quicker. This will allow the hunter enough time to run at it and slit the throat. Just wanted to shed some light on the method of how it is done on my country. Altho to some of you it is kind of barberic.

Thanks. that's a good tip.

Commonly, though, you try to kill the creature before it knows what is happening. Otherwise it gets an adrenaline rush which taints the flavour of the meat.

Good to know that when a bear chases us, once it eats us, it will be eating tainted meat. Altho I still think that the bear will get the last laugh.
Yes but if you''re in a very dense forest, you can not help it but to step on twigs and that sort and to alert the animal. They have a keen sense of hearing to their advantage and know their home better than most of us so it can''t be help but to alert them unless you''re a very able hunter.
