What does a game need? (No newbie post, I hope. :)) )

Hello, well, some may already know me or remember. I haven''t posted anything for maybe two months now. A couple of days ago I downloaded a game called Dupe Wars. It is pretty high in the download numbers at download.com. It is extremly technically simple. I would guess it could be done in Delphi (not even C++ needed) in about 1 month. Hehe. If the developer is on this board: Don''t get me wrong. No offense. It is very cool to have a successful and yet very simple game. (If you haven''t checked it out, please do. It is quite worthwhile) My point here is: Why do you personally think that this game is so successful (and please don''t only say it is because the name suggests drug use). I would be glad if those people who are professional in the budget market (developers and publisher people) could comment on this one.

Had some trouble finding it. Turns out it is Dope Wars
Sure. I am sorry. Both sounds very similiar.
Be sure to get DOPE WARS 2.0 though.

I haven''t seen the game in question, but I would like to point out the following:

If we actually *knew-for-certain* what made Game A successful while Game B languished in obscurity, we''d all be a lot richer... ;-)

I think it probably is because the name suggests drugs use, if I would be watching a list of names of games I would probably download it just for that. There''s an ingredient that makes everything sell more: sex. Some cool names:
The Secret of Whores Island.
Suck-man (F***-man is too strong)
Sex Quest 69 (from Sierra)
Grand Theft Blow Job
Pussy of Persia

Its got a good name, sure, but I think it spread due to word of mouth -- because it''s fun. The gameplay is intuitive and it makes you use your brain. That gives a broad sort of appeal, plus it fits a sort of Tetris/Solitaire niche in that it only takes about 5 minutes to play a game. It aims low but hits it right on the mark.
