I''ve had an idea to make this site a little better, or for FGN to make another one like it: Make it more of a schooling environment, where there are grades, or ranks, of gamedevelopers like Newbie, Charge, Veteran, etc. More than just articles, there is a weekly newsletter and game programming lessons as well as articles. The articles are available to anyone, but the lessons are only available to those who download a certain program. This free downloadable program scans the FGN sites on a weekly basis for new updates, downloads, articles, job offers, the newsletter, as well as downloading the week''s new lessons. It will also show very interesting human-hand-selected message board posts for the user to read and reply to. The lessons show how to program in the most popular languages, as well as different levels of game development. The Newbie is at level 1, so will receive level one lessons. The Charge, on the other hand, is at level 2, so will receive lessons at his/her level. The Veteran and higher ranks will not receive any lessons. To get the lessons as well as the free program, the user must already be signed up for the message boards. The different ranks are: 1-Newbie 2-Charge 3-Veteran 4-Moderator 5-Adminastrator Moderators and Adminastrators can have any custom title they want. I''ve seen some like "No Limit Soldier" and others. Something like that. Or they can just stick with their default title. This would make the site much more of a learning environment for game development than just a big website with articles and message boards, so I think would be well worth it.

I don''t see what''s so bad about the way it''s done now -- a collection of websites, articles, source code, etc. for anyone to peruse at their leisure. That lesson idea sounds unnecessary and overly complicated. My guess is the reason you suggested it is because you feel you need something like that now, in which case either take a programming course (online or not) or learn where the best online sources of articles and information are.

Links to try:

nehe.gamedev.net (for OpenGL)
www.programmersheaven.com (large collection, some outdated stuff)
www.flipcode.com (for DirectX)

Yeah, if you go to programmersheaven.com''s C/C++ board, we''re pretty used to helping out students of programming, heh. Just don''t ask for your HW to be done. Not saying you will, but, well, you get the idea, heh .

Hey I''m fine with how it is now, but I''d just like to see something like that be done.

In any case, I just bought Sams Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days: Complete Compiler Edition today, and I have to say I''m impressed with it. I like the idea of lessons rather than just chapter-by-chapter, peice-by-peice, put-it-all-together-yourself kinda crap.

And your right it does sound a little too complicated, doesn''t it? Ahh, that''s alright. Listen or not, lessons or no lessons, I don''t mind.
Hey man, dont think that everything will be handed to you on a silver platter. To be a programmer of any significance, you have to pursue it. Its hard work, others cant do everything for you. There is only so much you can do with going through a certain set of lessons. The rest you have to put together yourself.

What does FGN have to do with anything?
If you wants something in a lesson format, then go here:
Hands-On Interactive Game Development

This should be similar to what you are looking for.

Did I say I wanted everything given to me? I don''t recall that. I said I had an idea, that''s all.

I do however recall saying I don''t really have a problem with how it is now. I like it now, but I had an idea and posted it. And I also recall saying I bought a book (actually 3, now: STY C++ in 21 Days, C++ for Dummies, and Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus) on C++ and game programming, so I AM making some good pursuits, I think.

I do enjoy GameDev and how it is now, but these are just ideas.
