This is a great article, one of the best I have read on game design.
One area that I would add is avoiding "suspence of belief". Some games have behaviour that doesn't make any sense, like tanks units being weaker than infantry units. While it's true that realism often has to suffer for game play, it doesn't mean that the game designer should throw realism out the window at any pretext.
