@Watermelon Chris: The point of negative post rating is to let other people know the content of the post is wrong or inaccurate. It's mainly meant to be used for posts of technical nature, which is why we're looking to remove it from places like the Lounge and Help Wanted.

Except that as far as I can tell, a negative post rating doesn't say anything about correctness/accuracy - it only shows popularity.

If thumb scores were weighted by user rating, the system might indeed settle out that way, but given that in the current system a random nobody has the exact same negative/positive effect as a subject expert, it doesn't actually reflect the right quantity.

A negative post rating only means that people either didn't like a post or disagreed with it's content. It says nothing about the merit of the post itself. It is definitely a way to popularize or demonize certain posts and that's absolutely okay. The problem comes when people try to attach additional meaning to it.

It's like being in a meeting.. giving your opinion which is technically correct, and having others in the room shoot your idea or explanation down. That can happen.. so those with fragile egos may find that experience tough to deal with. It doesn't mean they were wrong.

But this is community moderation here.. it is a chance for forum members to recognize each other for the contributions they make whether that's good or bad.

Except in anything but a very badly run meeting, ideas aren't just "shot down" without there being justifications -- particularly when the idea/explanation comes from (say) the highly experienced developer who has historically shipped good product. It's not that the intern in the room doesn't get to have an voice an opinion, it's just that don't get to say "no" without a reason. They're quite allowed to say "Ah, could I just point out this reason why this may not work...", but they don't get to just say "nope". Well, not and keep their job for very long.

Popularity is, historically in a number of fields, a poor way of choosing correctness. No-one likes an answer which is difficult and would prefer an easy one and popularity contents will select the latter; which is fine as long as you can guarantee that there will only ever be easy answers to things.

But how often do you get a post that is wrong or inaccurate? This isn't an answer+question site. People aren't just going to be at the first reply and fly off.
How is the current reputation upped/downed btw?

The sum of the +/- Xs on all of your posts is used to seed a pseudo-random number generator that then generates a random number on the range 0 to your total number of posts, which results in your reputation.

And there we have the perfect example: a post that is entirely devoid of factual correctness, while still liable to be overwhelmingly popular :)

LoL... Btw what +/-? =/

Yup, you got it.. which is why it has *nothing to do with correctness* in this forum. I prefer a continuation of dialogue to address topics of a problem, but also am fine if people want to recognize others for what they bring to the table with this up/down voting system. These "kudos" type points are awarded when someone can identify with a response or find it worthwhile.

With 2,321 posts you really got the short end of the stick with 56 rep points then. As a technical point. if one starts an account and posts one post.. two people can vote that post up, thus allowing their reputation to exceed the total number of posts. The actual ceiling is infinite, which makes 56 look even smaller. ;)

But seriously though, 56 times someone thought enough of your posts to hit that "like" button. So something you did resonated with some people.
