I have a game idea... Now what?

Hi guys,

Well, it is a bit more than the title suggests. :)

I had a game idea, which I am currently working on (100% solo) and it is coming along better than I could have hoped. The game is PC based.

I am guessing that (code-wise) I am at about 75% complete, the rest is touching up graphics, extinguishing the last few bugs, and adding a final spit and polish. Estimating a couple of months work at my pace.

So, what next?

If I decide to try and sell it as an indie developer, what is the best plan of attack?

Do I enter it in the next IGF (if completely by Oct 17th) and see what happens? Or is there another way that I should look at promoting it when the time comes?

As, I am aware of the fact it could be the 'best game on the planet' (so to speak) but if no one knows about it, then all of the work and effort means nothing.

I would love to hear your thoughts :)

Yes. By all means, enter it in IGF. In the meantime you should write a business plan. Examine different monetization models, and see if you can come up with one nobody's used to death yet.

Thanks for the advice.

I more or less have the direction pathed out for a monetization method (or two). But, I guess the promotion part is what is bothering me most.

On a shoesting budget, how can an indie promote their game well (without relying soley on winning a place in the IGF)?

Who do you know ? (If you know anyone who has a popular game related website, blog, youtube channel, whatever you can get alot of free exposure)
What platforms are you targeting ? What is your competition on Windows ?
If you are targeting niche platforms and/or demographics you should try to get the word out to whatever communites they have. (Most niches have websites covering their areas of interest so if you're targeting a niche its not that difficult to reach out to the most hardcore fans of that niche).

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!
Hi Simon,

It is a 2D side (& vertical) scroller (initially only for Windows XP & above - depending on publlic interest). Although , a port would be relatively trivial to other platforms due to the forethought I have used in coding.

The closest comparison would be Super Mario-style, but nothing visually like SM.

The subject matter is unique and hasn't been done before (from what I can see from extensive Google searches).

That's why I am holding cards reasonably close to my chest at this time (with regards to content). There are less than half a dozen people in the world that know what it is about.

But I am hoping that when it is released, it will be as awesome fun for others as it is for me. :)
Check out Steam Greenlight when it launches. Desura is another place you can launch an indie game fairly easily.
Nice links.

Greenlight looks promising, that might even co-incide well with my timeline.
