Using DirectSound

I am trying to use DirectSound to get some basic sound effects and possibly a backing track at a later date in to my game.


I haven't done much sound at all in programming and cannot seem to find ANY suitable tutorials using C++ on the net. Can someone please help me with this?

I am wanting to play a WAV file (gun shot, explosion etc...) each time an event occurs.

Is DirectSound still going? It was my understanding you should use XAudio2. It's supported since some XP service pack if memory serves.

Yes, DirectSound is a legacy subsystem and not hardware-driven under Vista and newer.
