In every game studio that I've worked the terms are used interchangeably. All coders were either called programmers or software engineers, regardless of whether they were junior, senior, or lead. The only real difference seemed to be in the separating line between programmers/engineers and scripters.

Still working towards a computer science degree. In terms of a portfolio to show for, I have written a simple arcade shooter game working with several features(animations, health system and inventory system). It took me a little over 4 months from not knowing anything about how to make it to completing the ideas I had in my mind. I did have 2 years of experience of programming in Visual Basic, Java(graphics & GUI) and really basic parts of C++ which helped throughout the process. And this community guide me pretty well. Hope this portfolio makes me stand out.

This is a great achievement and I don't want to sound negative, but it won't likely make you stand out. Concentrate on finishing your computer science degree, keep lots of positive energy about you and interview with lots of different companies, even ones you don't think you're qualified for and you'll have no trouble finding a great job!
