heightmap

could anyone tell me how to create a heightmap picture? when i saw a picture used for heightmap,i think i can''t explain how it was made. though perhaps it''s a programming-independent question,pls tell me the answer,thank u. jerry2 Programming,make a whole new world.

Just use any half decent image manipulation software (Paint Shop Pro, PhotoShop, GIMP, etc) and save it as a greyscale image.

u can paint it yourself. or u could use some algorithm to generate a heightmap eg smoothed noise, fractals etc.
check out ''terragen'' for examples
