Logging in logs me out elsewhere

I doubt this is a bug so much as dodgy login code. It is annoying that the site only lets you maintain one login at a time. It means that I can't easily switch back and forth between my computer and my mobile device, e.g. checking for new content using my phone, and my main desktop computer. Logging in on one device causes me to become logged out on another. This creates friction when trying to be involved and means that sometimes when I might participate in a thread, I don't, because my phone has become logged out as usual, so I am forced to log in to see what content is new or to reply to a thread. Most other forums do not have this problem.

Hrm, that's very annoying, that doesn't happen to me... I'm always logged in from both my phone and laptop and sometimes other devices as well and have never had problems with being logged out.

Are you just using the basic login, or Facebook or Twitter connect?

What browsers and operating systems are you using?

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

NOT facing the issue.

I visit at home PC (Chrome), work PC and work laptop (Opera, Safari, Chrome, sometimes Firefox), Android phone, Android tablet. Also using the old traditional non-linked basic login. I needed to sign in on each machine rarely, such as after a site upgrade. Normally it just keeps me logged in every time I return.

Yeah, it's normal to be logged out occasionally, it's only if it's happening constantly that there's a problem. Thanks for the additional data-point.

I log in using Google, so I'm guessing the problem is related to the social login code?

Could be -- we've got a couple of high-priority issues that will probably have to be dealt with first, but we'll look into it.

If anyone else is experiencing the same issue and can chime in to confirm what type of login you use the extra data-points could help us to find the problem quickly.

When I log in with Google, it always takes me through the authorization granting screen, even though I've logged in many times before, so I don't know if that has any bearing on the problem. Also, I believe oauth gives you some kind of login token to store server side, so I wouldn't be surprised if you're maybe overwriting the old login token with the new one, which would definitely have the effect of logging out any previous sessions. Just speculation...

That could indeed be the case -- we've had to fix other issues with logins in the past, so it's entirely possible that something isn't being handled correctly.

What I've noticed is that when logging in from a public computer, you have to check the counterintuitive box about "remember me" (I may be misremembering what the box wording is), else you won't be able to do anything on the site. In other words, you think you've logged in, but you haven't (if you tell it not to remember you). You have to check "remember me." Then, when leaving, you have to manually log out.
