How many polygons/vertices?

This question might seem stupid, but how many vertices/polygons can you have in a scene, and still have normal frame rate? I am talking about a hardware accelerated scene, I don''t think it matters whether u''re using OGL or D3D. I understand that it depends on a lot of other stuff, like alpha blending for example, but in general... Forget about clipping for now, I am how many polygons can be on the screen at a time.
