New TFT monitor

Thanks to the collective advice from the lounge I'm now the owner of a 20.1" Dell 2007FP TFT monitor. I had to go with Dell in the end as the Samsung models were all out of stock (suggesting it wasn't coming back into stock due to being end-of-line)...

My "office"

I've only just about got enough space to put the thing on my desk [smile] Given that I have two computers I decided to just connect one to each rather than do any elaborate dual-monitor thing.

From initial inspection the quality is good but I have to admit I'm not noticing a huge difference between my 5 year old 15" and the Dell 2007FP. I do seem to have two dead-pixels though [sad] - about a centimetre in from the right edge of the screen. Highly doubt they'd exchange a monitor for that though...

Right, well I'm going to get on with a bit of D3D10 work before I flatten my test machine for Windows Vista RC1 and the October SDK [grin]

Dead pixels eh? The manual from my Dell laptop recommended that if I had dead pixels (dull pixels more accurately, rather than completely dead or fixed colour), that rubbing around them gently with a soft cloth might fix them. I'm not sure how "scientific" that method is, but it did fix one on my laptop.

It's worth giving it a go, so long as no-one sees you gently rubbing your new monitor [smile].

hmmm, dead pixels... that doth suckth... more so considering you've only brought one 20.1" and found two and I've got two 24" and I've got none [grin]

OK, done rubbing it in now, heh

Tried the rubbing the area gently but it doesn't seem to make any difference [sad]

Yes, quiet you [smile]

I'm not too bothered about the dead pixels - at 1600x1200 they're not noticeable unless you actually choose to look for them. Problem is that I know they're there so I keep looking at them [rolleyes]

Cheers,
Jack

*yawn*

It's taken almost twice as long to install Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite than it did to install Windows Vista. My nice new monitor should be put to better use than showing endless progress bars...

Yeah, they sure streamlined the Vista install in RC1. I was amazed at how quick it went compared to beta2.

As for dead pixels, check your warranty. Some companies have a 0 dead pixel policy, and will replace your monitor if you have any. Other companies do 4 I think, so you might be better off looking for two more [smile].

It works, although I wasn't that gentle. I punched the screen when I noticed that five pixels were dead in the morning! I have now done it twice and currently I have zero dead pixels [grin]

Congrats on the new monitor, Jack. I hope the dead pixels won't be too much of a bother.

I haven't played with Vista RC1. The only version I ever managed to install was beta 2. However, my hard disk could be at fault. The one I installed Vista to died, and I guess it could have misbehaved enough before that to throw the RC1 installation off.

Basically, I never go to play with Vista much, sadly.

i brought of those a couple of weeks ago my first lcd (cept a brief stint on a laptop ) nice working at 1600x1200 btw i worked out this monitors 100dpi
ive one dead pixel in the bottom right corner, dont notice it though what with all the smudge marks, orange juice stains etc ive already covered it with
one thing with the lcd u lose the natural AA that a CRT provides

Enh, chances are you can live with it. My monitor back at waterloo has a dead pixel right in the center of it and after awhile I find it doesn't bother me.

It was quite bizarre though, 'cause it's a CRT...

I can't remember by comparison, but in general the Vista installations have been pretty quick for a while. I seem to remember the first time I really noticed it was going from 5270 to 5308, which is when they introduced "staged" builds..

I don't think it will be - I'm not really noticing it anymore...

That's a shame. I had to go as far as buying a whole new PC just to play with Vista [lol] As of late I've done less "playing" and more "fighting" - the new security stuff is driving me crazy. I think I might even drop back to 32bit as it seems to be less strict than 64...

I suppose so, but I've been using LCD exclusively for several years and I don't find it bothers me anymore. Then again, I've never been too bothered about enabling MSAA in games...

How strange - I thought dead pixels were an LCD/TFT thing [smile]

Cheers,
Jack

You need a bigger desk.

Yes, I do need a bigger desk. Sadly I have a small room and this is about as big a desk as I could hope to fit in. Unless I removed my bed and slept curled up in the corner... [oh]
