Police station / jail...

In addition to starting a lot of final work on the real time strategy aspects of the game, I started working on the 'legal system' in the game. You have the option of surrendering to police officers, your gangster will go to jail for X amount of time based on the crime, he can wait it out, or you can pay to get them out. The whole time they are in jail they count against your gang member count, and you loose if all your gangsters are in jail. Also paying their way out of prison is expensive.

You can take control of your gangster when he's in jail, though you'll just see him standing in the jail cell :-D

I was debating between a Alcatraz style prison, or a downtown type police station / jail combo. I decided to go with the latter after seeing this image...I believe it's from a batman cartoon or comic. I really like the whole gotham city look associated with the batman series.

I really liked the way the stairs were setup...my police station was a near exact copy of this one, but the colors didn't look right so I had to go a slighty different direction....

Here is how mine looks @ a few different times of day...hmmm I guess I didn't include a night screenshot, I'm sure I'll have one posted soon enough though.

Here is a little screenshot showing the way I'm going to do the jail cell, I'm going to implement smooth fading between scenes as well to make the transition to the jail better.

Obviously the jail cell hasn't been started yet...

Hopefully a update regarding some fianlized aspects of the RTS system tommorow...

That building doesn't really look like a jail... It really has no distinguishing features besides a sign that says jail.

Perhaps put jail bars over the windows or something.

Yea actually it's not supposed to be a jail, it's supposed to be a police station...as far as I can tell from these reference pics there are no bars on police station windows.

I dunno, that little cartoon image I posed in my entry was probably the best picture of a city police station I could find anywhere :-D Maybe I could make the building shorter that might give it a better look, most of those buildings aren't very tall.

Police stations always have a few holding cells and that's where your gangsters will be if they get arrested.

How about of having a small mini-game while the gangster is in jail, where you could persuade other gangsters, or even just random NPC's to join your gang?

That way, jail doesn't have to be all about the downside. [grin]

Yea, I might as well go all out and create a "hide the soap" mini-game for when you're in jail [grin].

Nice idea, i like it, but i do agree with the guy, when i saw your building i could not really tell thats its the jail or police station, maybe because of the height. You should keep it at 2 stories and wider. also how do you do that? lol make the buildings?

I think I can hear Jack Thompson revving up his suitcase. [grin]

Have you guys actually seen a police station in a big city before? They look exactly like the one in the screenshots. The jail cells are usually in the basement or on the first few stories. The rest of the floors are taken up by offices for investigators, ect...

I say, DON'T change the style of the building. It looked like a police station the first time I saw it.

When you mouse over another character in jail, you can have a "make bitch" option. [grin]

A friend of mine was thrown in jail one night and I had to pick him up. He had an interesting story though. When you put a bunch of criminals in one place in real life, they don't exactly sit idle like they do in the movies. They actually begin conspiring. One guy might have a connection for fake ID's and another for a credit card scheme. Before they are put in jail they are only small time crooks, but become organized for bigger things after. I've always been intrigued by that and just now realized it would make an interesting gameplay device. Hmmm.

Yeah, I like the jail too. But one question: is that a helicopter landing pad on the building roof? And if so, why is there no roof access... :)

I know -I'm so pedantic ;)

Maybe the landing platform is on hydraulics and actually lowers down into the building to the floor below so the passengers don't get blown off the roof top :)

Yea, at least somebody else here knows about the hidden hydraulic helicopter pads on top of all inner-city police stations.

[grin]

Yeaaaa I'll add roof access. I knew somebody would call it out as I was making the model. Keep me honest :-D
