Long Time No Post

Well, it's been a long time since I've posted anything here. Time seems to keep dwindling as the school year progresses. I've taken a break from my console project until after school ends for the summer, since that should give me a lot more free time to spare.

On a side note, SlimDX is starting to look VERY nice now. It's certainly usable for larger projects, and the new enhancements make it a breeze to use. We are shooting towards getting everything documented by June, but no promises. Also, we need Washu to get his lazy butt in gear and actually work on XAudio2.

So, I have a question for you people out on GDNet. How do you pick names for your games/libraries/projects? For example, do you just pick a boring, descriptive name such as MapEditor or RogueLike, or do you come up with more exotic names? I personally like to pick cool words or names from mythology and science. For example, one cool name I came up with recently is Valhalla, which is a crater on Jupiter's moon Callisto.

Quote:
Valhalla (Old Norse Valhöll, "Hall of the Slain") is Odin's hall in Norse mythology, located in the Asgardian realm of Gladsheim and is the home for those slain gloriously in battle (known as Einherjar) who are welcomed by Bragi and escorted to Valhalla by the valkyries. (The "höll" part of Valhöll means 'hall'.) The term 'Valhalla' has entered popular usage for an ideal, heaven-like destiny.

Guess what the crater was named after [wink]

Personally I just pick words which I like and go some way to describing the project. For example, 'Bonsai' is a cool word and my 'bonsai' project is meant to be a small 2D thing.

I sit around with my friends (they're all cats) and bounce ideas around. I like mythology too but I try to come up with names that somehow describe the game/app I'm making. Then I try to find the .com for the names. Then I search the webs for the names and do a trademark search as well. So many ideas are already taken but soon I have a list of possible candidates.

Then I hate them all and give up only to start over again. [smile]

Historically I've just stuck BR (my initials) in front, so my assembler is Brass, a DOOM engine project was Broom, and an interpreted language was Brill.

I do try to spice it up from time to time by naming it after something that is related to the project's subject, but by taking the alternative definition of the word - hence Cogwheel for a Game Gear emulator, and Emerson for an AT keyboard library.

All the computers I set up are given their model name, so on the network there's a Dimension, a Pavilion, an Optiplex, an Inspiron and a Satellite. Thankfully, there hasn't been a collision yet!

So no, I'm not very creative. I might have to start nicking names from classical mythology, but given the number of mail servers I've seen called Hermes, it could cause problems. [wink]
