ATTN Apple: Wishlist

OK, so I've been using the iPhone for a couple of days now. It's such a big step up from my previous phone that I can't help but be pleased with it. The interface is intuitive and generally responsive; there are some nice touches, like the ability to browse in both landscape and portrait modes simply by tilting the screen.

That said, it's set my imagination racing, and I am (naturally) finding things it doesn't do that I wish it did. Fingers crossed for the 3.0 update in 9 months time, or maybe they'll get done through the App Store...

  • Silent sync over bluetooth. When I'm sitting near my computer, I want the phone to automatically begin syncing things like contacts over bluetooth - I don't care if it doesn't get everything, a partial sync is better than no sync at all and it'd be easy enough to let me switch from silent to active sync if I want to make sure it's finished. I know it takes longer than USB; I don't mind. I know I'll be plugging the phone in often to charge; but I'd rather plug it in to a cradle next to my bed than to my PC.

  • RSS push/fetch. Just like with email, but so that facebook updates and stuff don't clog my inbox. It's possible to bookmark feeds on the phone so that I can check them by pushing a button, but I'd like the same kind of notification support that I get with email - automatic checking for updates, a noise and buzz when there's something new, etc.

  • An IRC client. There are a few of these around but none have yet been updated for the 2.0 software. Hopefully they'll start to appear in the next month or two.

  • Flash support. Apparently there's a load of business politics holding this up, but the sooner Apple and Adobe come to an agreement, the better. That said, Youtube have a special deal whereby pretty much all of their videos are offered in an iPhone-supported format, so my girlfriend and I were able to lie in bed watching Youtube videos last night. (Ah, geek love!)

I've also got a few ideas for apps - specifically something hooking in to the British transport network to provide info about bus/train timetables and to help you plan routes and changes on public transport. We'll see. $99 for a distribution license isn't terrible, but apparently the SDK won't run on my Mac as it's too old, so I'd need to buy a new Mac. I've been thinking about doing that for a while anyway, but having just dropped GBP100 on a phone I think I'll wait a bit before dropping GBP400 on a new Mac Mini.

Eh, I wouldn't say I'm an Apple fan per se, I just have no problem using their stuff, and I think that being diverse in your computing platforms is a strength, as it exposes you to a number of different ways of doing things.

My Mac Mini is a G3; I think I must have gotten it in 2005, or thereabouts. It was originally going to be a second development system for me - I bought a KVM switch to switch between it and my PC - but, sadly, I never really got into that, probably because XCode 1 pissed me off no end. These days I mostly just use it for playing music, though I've done a bit of video editing with it too.
