Word to the wise

I had an email yesterday from a guy with some questions about working in game testing. He had some very... optimistic impressions about what working in the field could be like. After straightening out some of his misconceptions, I asked him where he'd picked up the idea that he'd be able to make a living testing games out of his home...

GameTesterGuide.net is at best very poor quality and a worst a total scam, and should be avoided at all costs.

Google can show you some threads around the place where people have actually bought in and posted about what they recieved. Most notably, one guy recommended using chargeback to reclaim the money on a credit card.

Here's hoping you read this before it's too late...

Well, at least they warned you against becoming one of their custumers [sic].

That looks like a generic scam site if you ask me, I've seen near-identical layouts from stuff like dating to IQ testing.

Those "questions" look like a load of ass, also. You're testing, not reviewing... you'll be doing what you're told and checking for something specific, not giving your feedback on whether or not you think the single player campaign is fun or not.

Was there any noticeable game bugs?

That's the whole point of testing, and it's shoehorned in as an afterthought.

What age group do you believe this game would appeal to most?

You'd think the designers and developers would have decided this beforehand given they're going to design the game around it and eventually submit it to a ratings board for classification. I wonder if there's an early Gears of War test build featuring fluffy bunnies and pink flowers? [rolleyes].

You get to keep every game you test? Right, so I'd like to keep an unfinished debug build that blows chunks as opposed to a nice, shiny, finished retail build? Similarly, how are these tests going to be carried out? Do I need, for example, to sign an NDA with Microsoft and get a 360 Debug Kit delivered to my home? Do I need to keep the debug kit too?

"You can work as much or as little as you want to"; I don't see any signs of monitoring from the outside, so you could conceivably do fuck all and walk away with $2k. Something smells funny.

Fail. I can't see how anyone with half a brain can take that site seriously.

15 years old?

For those who don't know the game industry (after all, it's so easy to make a mmorpg where you can marry hulk), this may look genuine (he should work on the scamish look a bit though). Plus, it's quite cheap ($45! Woot! That's two hours of play!!?!)

Yes, that's a scam, and as such it is directed to people who can't see that it's a scam. People who understand that usually don't even try to click anything on this stupid site.

Remind me of these nigerian stuff. Who would actually believe that a young and beautiful taiwanese girl would give you hundreds of thousands dollars because she need a bit of help after her old and rich husband died in a car crash?

Apparently, loads of people.

My favorite. . .

"ACT NOW WHILE THE IRON’S HOT!! CAN YOU HEAR THE SIZZLE?"

Rule one of using a metaphor is "don't use a metaphor if you DON'T FRIGGIN' KNOW WHAT IT MEANS!"

As one site pointed out, it's a clickbank site. They set you up to sell dodgy ebooks for ridiculous prices, pretending that they're selling you actual business opportunities.

Yeah, I thought it looked kinda obvious too, but then again - clearly it wasn't enough to alert the guy who emailed me about it in the first place.

I actually laughed out loud when I read this post and took at look at the website!

I found a particularly amusing article here where they basically shred the site!

Also I found this amusing quote:
“Thank You so Much, I can't believe this actually worked. It took me only 5 Days to find a game tester job and I am making around $23 per hour, it’s so exciting. Thanks Again.”

We get paid pounds (£) in the UK .. Plus, minimum wage is only £5.52 ;-)

You know, if you say the word 'gullible' fast enough, it sounds like 'orange'?

No it doesn't. I tried.
