It begins...

Finally took the big step today and started contacting some companies with examples of my programming work.

Last year, I secured an interview for an AS2 developer position and demonstrated Squishy and the level editor on my laptop at their offices. They set me some assignments to write in AS2 which, due to other time commitments at the time, I was unable to complete.

As I said in my recent journal, now I am a layabout bum, I now have the time so, as attentive readers and Twitter followers will know, I've recently got myself up to speed on AS3 and written up a couple of the assignments that I could remember.

I emailed them earlier and the commercial manager came back within minutes with a really nice email. She is going to speak with the technical guy that interviewed me last year and get back to me, so that is going okay.

I've also emailed a couple of other local companies on a total punt, just to see if there is any interest.

My e-friend, Wijnand, who I first met on here and now regularly talk to on MSN, has been very encouraging in trying to convince me to take this plunge.

I have no degree, I have no professional experience and I have huge, gaping holes in my skillset. But I have a portfolio of work and can demonstrate both my passion and the speed at which I can pick up new languages and skills. I hope that will be enough.

I just want to earn a living doing what I love. I've always said that programming is not really something I choose to do as a hobby but something that I just do in my default state. Sit me in front of a computer and leave me alone and I write code. It's as simple as that.

So it is a good feeling to finally be trying to realise my dream of the last two decades to get paid for this. Be an even better feeling if I succeed but at least I'm trying.
