Planets seen through the atmosphere

I have a feeling many people will like that update :) Mostly screenshots. I've implemented planets as seen through the atmosphere of another planet. It works by combining the extinction and in-scattering equations separately with the color buffer. In other words, it correctly blends the atmosphere seen through an atmosphere seen through a third atmosphere. It's still not perfect though; i still have to work seriously on the atmosphere at night time (it's still "opaque" right now, so it appears as a kind of black fog).

Spectacular shots. Hey, you should go into the business of creating skyboxes! These would make great cubemaps...

Indeed, but i think it's normal. Maybe i can tweak some parameters to reduce the effect. This is because the colors in that area are additive, and there's already a lot of light coming from the blue-ish atmosphere. When displayed on a dark background it looks good, but when displayed on a blue background, it becomes too bright. This effect is also visible on the second screenshot.

SimmerD: that's a nice idea, however, only one face of the cube map would look "interesting". Maybe later in the future when i'll have more details (like clouds) who knows ?

Stompy: i can provide higher resolution images too if you want to :)

That's a good question. I'm not that far from completing the 3D engine.. maybe 6 months - but as for the game, that's another story. I'd say between 1 and 2 years before a first "playable alpha" with minimum gameplay.

Are you considering looking around for additional programmers or artists or do you plan to do the entirety of the work yourself?

I no longer rely on volunteers to do the work, i'm no longer naive. I am the only programmer and have no wish to change that situation. However, i will likely hire artists on a per-contract basis when i will be ready to add in-game content.
