Early-bird August DirectX SDK Announcement Symbols aren't live yet. Should be available at http://msdn.com/direct/sdk within next 24 hours.

eeek... I'm getting slow at spotting things, but good to see that theres still some healthy competition for announcements [grin]

Guess I really should close one and redirect to the other.

Cheers,
Jack

Sorry David but I was faster.

You were only faster here on Gamedev, but I'm pretty sure my blog post predates yours (at least, that's what my ego says :-)

Then again, I've all but given up trying to outrun you guys. I swear you and JollyJeffers just camp out the RSS feed for MSDN downloads just so you can be first-posters :-P

It was pure luck as I don’t use the RSS feed for the downloads.

For those interested in DX10:

I tried with Vista v5472 (the version rumored to be used as RC1). The DX10 samples didnt work at all unless they had a DX9 fallback...

Likewise - I've never really used RSS feeds [smile]

All intermediary builds tend to be labeled with the milestone - I've got 5 or 6 "Beta 2" builds for example. I'd imagine that the real/final RC1 build is due to appear soon...

You will need the "real" Vista RC1 as there are some changes in the SDK again.

I'd like to take the opportunity to whine about the SDK size. 506 MB is way too much--I don't care about D3D10 and all the beta stuff, and downloading and installing 506 MB every 2 months for only a couple of improvements, regardless of how important they are (e.g. shader debugging is great) is silly.

Then don't download it?

We are doing the same with some of our sdk's - some of them have
updates every week or so; we tend to just skip a few versions
before we upgrade (unless there is a critical feature we
absolutely urgently need...)

And why do I need to hold back and not upgrade except for critical and urgent features? Shader debugging is great to have--makes life much easier. But it's not critical.

A better question in my opinion is: Why bloat the SDK with stuff that a large percentage of downloaders don't need? Those willing to experiment with D3D10 wll definitely be willing to download a separate SDK for that.

Yeah, I've wondered about the same thing. Why not put the DX10 stuff in a separate download? It's not like DX10 is backwards compatible as such anyway. And it's a friggin' huge download.

But yay, shader debugging! [grin]

Maybe David will enlighten us on this one, but I did ask this about 6 months ago (around the time Dec'05 came out with the first D3D10 CTP).

The answer was that the DX9 and D3D10 "components" shared a lot of files/data/whatever thus splitting them was awkward and wouldn't actually save much space.

IIRC, pre-D3D10 the SDK's were about 100-150mb (?) and Dec'05 was a little over 300. Now its topping 500 its getting a bit silly [headshake]

As I understand it there are two versions of the Windows SDK (aka Platform SDK) - one for currently released OS's and one for Vista.

Given i can't even install Vista I can't make use of about 50% of the current SDK - reading the docs and watching the movies is all I can do.

I've just added a lengthy "review" of the August SDK to my journal if anyones interested. Most of it focuses on PIX and given that anyone/everyone can use it I'd be interested in alternative opinions/views [smile]

I'd imagine its a mistake. They specifically dropped it from Feb'05 and blocked it from Apr'05 last year... Dont see why they'd reintroduce support [smile]

Could well be referring to the runtime though - the SDK wont work on 2k, but applications built on DX9 should still work on 2k afaik.
