I got drunk and installed Debian

Long story short, Debian's installation process is so simple it can overwrite your Ubuntu installation while you've got a bottle of rum in you. I'm as shocked as you are. I'm not particularly fond of Debian, however, and would like to switch to something else. Preferably without using a CD. Do any particularly simple distributions work that way? I haven't noticed any that do, but maybe I'm overlooking something obvious. Note that I'd rather stick with debian until I can buy more CDs than spend eight hours building something from source. Perhaps it is possible to boot onto an ISO of a boot CD stored on my harddrive? That would be super cool. Thanks for any tips, CM

there was a version of knoppix out of MIT that you could download and boot from the web I seem to remember. Unfortunetly I can't find a link:)

You installed Linux while you were drunk.

OpenBSD and Debian both can net-install from floppy disks, and I'm sure there are other distributions that can too.

this thread made me spit coffee whilst laughing - you installed a linux distro whilst being drunk? I can barely even type, let alone install a new linux distro :P

Judging by what my friends tell me, I got pissed off because my sound doesn't work in Wine, and as a joke they suggested I install something other than Ubuntu. I then proceeded to hit them until they clicked the proper links since I couldn't use a mouse anymore.

No floppy drive, either. I'm really shooting for a hard drive based solution, although now that I think about it I may be able to jerry rig something with my laptop.

Now, is this before or after you start drinking?

However, with some of my friends I must say that I've been highly impressed at some of the things they pulled off while drunk. One of them solved some apparently unsolveable math problem while totaly drunk. Showed it to a math prof the next day who said it looked correct, however my friend couldn't tell him how he solved it, or remember what half of it ment.

There are probably some USB key versions of Fedora that will install over net.

I actually type quite well until I get drunk enough that I pass out. My arm movements are a little overexaggerated, though, which makes using a mouse almost impossible unless I use both hands, and I need to really focus to get myself back on the home row.

Of course, pen drives. That's a lovely solution that I completely overlooked, thanks :)

Did you run around naked singing the Free Software Song ?
I teleported home one night; With Ron and Sid and Meg; Ron stole Meggie's heart away; And I got Sydney's leg. <> I'm blogging, emo style

Who, me?

Although running around naked singing the Free Software Song sounds like something I'd do, the only stupid stuff I really do is decide I'm sober enough to code. [rolleyes]

Although the issue has never come up, I should think that drunk I am adamantly anti-free software, rather than just generally prefering commercial software. The only reason this comes up at all is because I can't find my Windows disk after my primary hard drive failed.

Although I'm probably going to boot from a pen drive ultimately, I found a site that said you can boot ISOs if you just put them in a partition all by themselves and have grub boot that partition. Does anybody know if this is true? I've only found the one reference to it thus far.

I've done a linux install half sober and finished while drunk (got bored, went and played pool, drank alot of course).. the password ended up as 'arsebiccys' for that reason..

Interestingly, I have no idea what my own password originally was. Fortunately, I set the root password to something I would remember and could get in that way [grin]

eedok: I'll take a look at arch, thanks.

IIRC Suse linux could be installed from the network. It's actually preferred way of installation.

Actually what do you have against Debian? It's quite decent when you'd do proper 5.0 Java standard update, and cross-link with all other OS, and Linuxes installed on the HD.

Every application I've tried to install has been more complicated than it has to be because apparently Debian doesn't keep its default repositories up to date. While an admirable design decision, it conflicts with how I want to use my system. I also can't get my sound to work, and my video card is iffy. Every distribution I've used except this one has configured my sound card properly out of the box, so I'm not sure what's going on there. Probably something stupid I did while drunk.

I have also apparently destroyed my user account, and can't figure out how to create a new one. That was my own fault, though, and I won't hold it against Debian or Linux in general.

I have no idea what that means.

For the record, I discovered twenty dollars in my pocket, so I just said screw it and bought a pack of CDs. It'll be two weeks before I can buy food, but at least I'll be hungry back in Ubuntu [grin]

Although I am still curious about booting directly from an ISO. Logically, it should be possible...if you can boot from the CD, why couldn't you boot from a partition that looks just like the CD? I just need to figure out how to make grub like it without destroying my bootloader *cough*again*cough*
