One day, a monk went to see his master, and asked: “My mainframe has limited memory, and cannot store enough polygons to render a forest of spheres. I beg thee, sensei, tell me how can I work around this?" The old master pondered and answered: “Polygons need to be drawn, not stored.” And the monk was enlightened.
Team name Ionware Productions This company name has been used by me for a long time, however it is not registered officially. It is a default starting name for the group, thus it is open for discussion. It will serve as a starting point and will allow you to be a part of something organized rather than just a bunch of people. Flintlock Software Another name that is not registered and can be used by the team. What is important is the fact that the name can be anything as far as it is supported by action and results. Project name Lightbringers of Dunharrow This is the original name for the project. It serves as a guide to the final destination as well as reminding us of its origins. The game will re-create the feeling of old top down action games such Crimson Land, Get Medieval and other games of similar style. Additionally we'll be adding a sense of humor as seen in such titles as Goblins, Bard's Tale and others. Fundamentally we will be achieving an improved state of gameplay by using modern 3D graphics, special effects and an expandable gameplay via episodic nature of the game. Brief description Below you can read an excerpt from the Design Document that shines the light on some things about the project. What is the game? The game is the top down scrolling shooter where you explore the dungeon, acquire weapons, armor or magical upgrades and bonuses as well as special items that will be used to help you to kill monsters, overcome traps, open doors and do a variety of other things. Why create this game? We're creating this game to prove our ability of producing a high quality and fun-to-play games as well as to have some means of additional income that will help us to develop other games. Where does the game take place? The game takes place in the ancient ruins of Agrannam, where our heroes gather to put an end to the undead king Lutheas. The ruins are located near the mountain river-pass, and lead deep into the mountain caves and dungeons, where the king has gathered his minions in the attempt to conquer the nearby city Aeranna. You (and your friends) have been chosen amongst the best to put an end to the threat and slay the villain king. What do I control? You control a single hero that possesses a variety of skills, attributing to the chosen class that is going to bash or burn/freeze his way to the evil king and put an end to the thread. What is the main focus? The main focus in this game is to survive evil king' minions and slay each of the nine Generals that command and gather the armies. You have to destroy major undead production systems as well as their coordinators in order to be able to defeat the undead king. What's different? The main difference lies in the gameplay that will suck you for dozens of hours as well as the great gameplay experience with your friends on the LAN or Internet. Stunning 3D effects and addictive gameplay will force you to try the game again and again. Target aim The game is going to be freeware, BUT with the possibility of being transferred to the commercial domain. Long-term plans include game ports to other platforms(if feasible) and the creation of expansions(episodic content). Compensation There is no compensation, however a PayPal account will be used to gather donations and to purchase necessary programs, assets and such. I will allocate a certain amount of my own money for purchasing aforementioned things such as Milkshape licenses, TurboSquid assets and other things the project may require. Remember, this is a freeware project, however if it goes commercial, then the revenue and royalties will be divided equally amongst the members of the team. Technology Target Platform Windows XP and upcoming Vista. Programming Language C++ in Microsoft Visual Studio Express Libraries Boost - Serialization, Timer, Shared Pointers, FileSystem, Signal-Slot, Function Objects and other TinyXML - Export/Import XML FreeImage - Image/Texture Operatio Artist Tools Graphics/Textures - GIMP, Adobe Photoshop 3D Modeling - Milkshape 3D Sound Tools - Fruity Loops(or an alternative) Talent needed I realize that it is hard and tedious to develop a game by committing personal time to the project that is not yours. Thus, I need only a few (3-4) people that are able to dedicate that time and follow me to the end of project. Ideally I'm looking to compose a team that will develop a project, be patient, reliant and consistent throughout it - similar to the teams working on Armada Online, Hero of Alacrost, 0 A.D and others. The people I'm looking for are: Artist His/her main task will be to create sketches and drawings for the game that will be used to create textures, models and effects. Also, he/she will be responsible for creating or composing those textures from a few gigabytes of freeware textures that I possess. 3D Modeler His/her job will be the creation of 3D assets (textured or not) from sketches and drawings provided by the Artist. Audio Designer His/her task will be the creation of sound and music as well as some minor voice acting if necessary. Team structure As described above, the team will consist of 3-4 people including me. If we're to require any additional help, it will be discussed and posted on Help Wanted forums at Gamedev.net website. My role in the team will be: Programming Creation of the website Code Repository, website, forum and CMS hosting Stepping up to help with unusual problems and requests Maintaining communication and meetings for the team Website At the moment I have only my personal website (and its SourceForge relative) that doesn't relate to the project. However, they have a few resources, such as GUI, serialization and Model code that is used in the project. New website will have its own domain name & hosting when we come to final conclusion of what it is. The code is about 30% complete, so there is a possibility that we're going to need another programmer. However, at this stage I believe that the most tedious and time-expensive things - Art and Sound assets(along with level and gameplay design) - must be ready before the code. Another thing is that we're probably going to need a person on the team with humorous personality to help us with jokes for the game :)

Given my username, do I get any veto rights on the project name? :D

Looking good so far, good luck. It's pretty cool of you to have a design doc, but I think you might want to edit it a bit more, since there are still some parts of it that are pre-canned from the original - I'm not so sure about there being unlighted eggplants in the game, for instance. ;)

Thank you lightbringer, you might get some rights, but not all :)
I'm still working on Design Document since my major task was coding and debugging. I'll be uploading new versions daily (hopefully) and, I hope for help of the team members with it. While not taking a leading position in the team, I'd rather see a collaborative effort and decisions leading towards its completion than the commonly seen pyramid organization. :)

Soon I am going to post a simple demo with Ion Engine, until then here are a few pictures that were produced by rendering Milkshape models using Ion Engine:

Update

Here is a little demo I've composed to show the initial functionality of Ion SDK. You can use navigation keys to move the camera around and left-click the mouse to switch to the next model displayed. The demo is composed with use of Ion Engine as a stand-alone application. You can get it here.

I had to download the FreeImage DLL from Sourceforge to get this to work. You may want to redestribute it with your application. Works fine over here, though the spinning etc was a bit fast.

Bump.

I've included FreeImage.dll in the package and am still looking for team members listed in the original post. Please, if you feel that you may help me in any way, do not hesitate to post!
