The fog!

Alright, I''m attempting to make a little 3d demo in openGL on my own, as opposed to a team project. Just so i can have a feeling of self worth. Now, everything so far works. You can run, jump, and punch on a working 3d landscape. Now, i want to add a fog effect. Not like a distance thing to hide magically appearing poly''s, but more of a swamp fog, where there is a strange mist covering you up to your ankles. How would one go about accomplishing this? I tried google and searched the onsite articles, but they came up with nothing.

Have you looked in the Reference section; there is pretty much about fog effects there.

EDIT: Sorry, now I saw that you searched there. Do browse instead.

Billboarding/particle systems.

View dependant Alpha enabled volumes.
You can go to GameTutorials.com. They have a heightmap map tutorial with volumetric fogging that you might want to check out
