Getting started

Or rather, getting started again. I''m looking for easy-to-use software for sequencing music. I''ve used soundfonts until just recently, I really don''t like Creative''s buggy drivers so I''m looking for alternatives. What software / sample formats are you using? I''m just looking for a way to pick up music creation on the computer again, without too much hassle. Any suggestions? // Kanzetsu

I am an eternal proponent of the tracker formats. Some will call them outdated or clunky, but they are an alternative to soundfonts, and the creation process is entirely different, and is suited to a certain frame of mind.
Barring that, I would say make the leap to professional formats, like giga or akai. That represents an investment, though.
Plus, you can actually get some pretty good results with trackers. I myself use tracker programs only, and just select my samples carefully.

Yes, as long as you don''t cling to the demoscene ideology of tiny filesize, you can make great sounding songs. Every song I create is at least 70 or 80 megs, simply because I won''t settle for a sub-par sample. After the fact, it comes down to post processing(the other side of the Sound Quality coin) and encoding.
Yes, I used to do tracking a long time ago, thought I could never find more than a few good-sounding samples. Where do you get your instrument samples from? I''m mostly interested in more orchestral music, not techno or something like that.

Well, it''s easy(provided you ahve the composition ability) to make great orchetral music that sounds like mod music...but to do a believable job, you would do more sample manipulation than I would care to think about(with my scruples, I would require fully multisampled instruments, for the entire orchestra, and do a lot of manipulation to make the note transitions sound right...
If orchestral is your real passion, I would suggest you start investing in a high quality sample library, which precludes your getting a real sampler/studio(Gigastudio).
