Great movies over 2.5 hours long.

Seven Samurai . What makes it stand out most for me is that it contains the definitive depiction of a handful of archetypes. While I appreciate the cinematography and other technical aspects of the film, I'm not qualified to go on about how it was a ground-breaking film in many repsects, but I'm aware it has that reputation.

LotR. Tora Tora Tora (just kidding)

Gosh, I'm sitting here trying to think of movies that long, and realizing that really aren't that many at all. Here's what I could come up with:

Braveheart - Great music, great acting, one of the most emotional movies ever made. Character development was awesome, and makes the final scene even more sad. Some historical inaccuracies though - or so I've been told.

Das Boot - I think this one if over 2.5 hours. I've got the director's cut, with English subtitles. What a cool movie. How often do you get to see WWII from the German point of view? It's a strange feeling at the end of the movie - you know that the Allied bombing run is a good thing, but you can't help but sympathize with the Nazi soldiers.

Were any of the LOTR movies that long? If so, yah, they were pretty good.

Wow. 2. Maybe I'll remember some other ones later.


EDIT: Oh yeah. Saving Private Ryan. We've all seen it, and I enjoy for the reasons everyone else probably does. There were two scenes that blew me away like no other movie has done, though. The first one - where the medic gets wounded, and he knows that he is going to die, and asks for morphine. And then cries for him mom...tough to watch. The second - where the German soldier is lying on top of the American guy, and slowly driving the knife into his heart. They're about 3 inches away, and the lack of mercy was, for lack of a better word, depressing.

Why don't you just watch five episodes of Friends? That would be 2 and a half hours long. Or if you really want, Saving Private Ryan is a good movie, and I think it is over 2 and a half hours.

Scarface - If you ever want to become a drug lord or crime boss, you must watch this movie. Vice City was probably created partly as an homage to this movie. GTA3 had many of this movie's songs in its own soundtrack. It stands up pretty well despite the fact that it's 20 years old. Probably more violent than most movies even today.

The Great Escape - Very charismatic and likeable characters doing very cool things. Great ensemble cast. Nobody is cooler than Steve McQueen. The premise involves a bunch of elite soldiers trying to escape from a German POW camp. It's a pretty serious premise but it has a lot of great humour and fun moments. The game Prisoner of War took many things from this movie. Interestingly enough, someone is making a game directly tied to this movie.

Band Of Brothers: (Granted, its not a movie, but a series of movies, total''ing approx 10+ hours) A truly phenominal series about a group of American Airborne soldiers. From D-Day to the last days of the War. Never a Dull moment... A lot of the scenes really capture how horrific WWII was.

A Bridge To Far: Wicked awsome movie, what more can I say?

I couldn''t believe that the President''s secretary was going behind his back. Nice twist, IMHO.

"Lonesome Dove" was pretty epic and damn fine, but it was originally a miniseries. It comes in at 6 hours. Technically, it''s not quite the same as a theatre type movie, but still, it''s worth renting or getting at the library if you can.

I think these are Sergio Leone''s best efforts. The first is my favourite western of all time, though very closely followed by all three films in the "man with no name" series.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly. Exactly two hours and thirty-six minutes, and an excellent flick.

Solaris (the original one; I think it was pretty long). What a brilliant and deep movie.

Apocalypse Now Redux. It has its flaws, but it''s still one hell of a movie.
