Exceed and xwin32 allow for remote login to *dm if you have it configured to allow remote X logins.

Sure, if you want to use linux as a desktop, install all the bullshit you want, but he''s looking for a linux server. The console is more powerful and can be automated much better than any GUI will allow.
GUI:s only add to the traffic and complexity.

You specifically said "linux" and not "linux server". Had you said that, then I would mostly agree with you.

Instead of thinking "console vs. gui", think "console + gui".

I couldn''t agree more here.
Ok, I installed my first Linux.

And I''m willing to give SSH a try.

But I need to know, if I wish to transfer files between my remote computer and the linux machine I''m logged in to can this be done via SSH? Or should I ftp them?
Most implementations of SSH comes with SFTP, use that.

cygwin has a nice Win32 X Server for doing forwarded X sesssions.

I use it to run Linux programs on my server from my WinXP workstation.
Or you can use scp (secure cp) for file transfer, works fine for single files.
can the X server with cygwin run opengl applications using 3d hardware cos ive been looking for an x server(for windows) that can do that for ages.
