What color depth do most of you use for your engines? I''m writing a 2d engine that builds the "map" in system memory into a big buffer, then copys that buffer to the back buffer on the video card. What colordepth does everyone think i should use? -Zims

i would recommend 16 bit
24 bit is not supported on alot of vid cards
32 bit probably won''t look any better than 16 bit in a 2d game

Definitely 16 bit.
8 bit is a pain in the butt. It''s supposed to be fast(well, it is fast, but most computers can do 16 bit very well).

The rest, well it''s like +AA_970+ says.

I do the same in 800x600 16bits

but it is so slow....on a voddo3/16M card....ehhhh

so slow that i think to go to 8bits....

but in 8 bits graphics are so much hard to do...

so i am balanced...and hope that pc will improve...i stay on 16 bits...for now....

Hope you understand my problems...

A voodoo 3 is that bad? Always thought it was good at 16 bit. Heck, I even thought it was faster than the TNT2 in 16 bit. Must be a misconception.

p.s. let''s say I have a program that runs in 32 bit color. Will it run on the Voodoo 3? Or will SetDisplayMode return an error?
