online RPG idea

Could someone please tell me if they would like to play this game. I have an idea for an entire world with its own weather system. Where you can do almost anything like buy a ship and put cannons on it and become a pirate. Or build a house and be a farmer. There could be story seas, in bad weather. You could go ontop of some cliffs and watch the sun rise in an entire 3d world. Or ride a dragon through the clouds. You could build a empire of npc''s and online players and have wars with catapults archers or what ever type of class the people in your empire are. Ther would also be mysteries like a mysterious sword deep in a duneon protected by the black dragon. Or you and your friends could take over a town if you are strong enough to kill the guard and people who fallow the law dont kill you first. i also have idea where you could raise people to rebel agains a king and defeat him and his empire to be free. That is my idea for a online rpg. (It would be big and computers/consols maynot beable to handle it now , but think if they could and what it would be like) -OoMMMoO

I was responding to this post, and it appears that my response ended up in a post of its own...the one entitled "TRUE Role-Playing at last"
I agree with you to. I also think weather would be a big factor in traveling by boat and stuff like that.
Also imagine just sitting on a mountain at night while its raining with a friend and your watching a huge battle between two clans and you see huge boulders or items on fire flying through the night sky and you see soldiers in the ravine fighting.

I was also thinking if this type of game would be cool where you have hitpoints and stuff like in most rpg''s but the fighting is more controlled by the player and so you can strafe or use your shield when you see arrows flying aboe you(but you have a certain chance of getting hit so archers have a chance of killing people) and you click the mouse when you swing or something like that

Love the idea. To be honest however, I do think most persistant MMORPG''s or just RPG''s start out this way. The problem occurs, like you said, when things like hardware are considered. Also, budget, time limit and overall programming skills pools.

I would love to see this level of realism in any game, not just an RPG. And to be quite frank, I am designing something now, much like what you describe. Considering that the constraints of money and time don''t have a hold on me, the design team has pushed the document to the breaking point of fantasy/reality. Not to mention we have all but ignored the limitations and/or minimum requirements of today''s machines (IOW, we are designing for the next gen from now cutting edge hardware).

I think it would be great to see the level of interaction and sheer "empty" play time (just aimlessly walking around talking and drinking, watching the sun set) you descibe here.

I think that''s a terrific idea. I don''t think that the hardware requirement would be that absurd. IMO, EQ was more than adaquately visually appealing, and it''s hardware requirement wasn''t too trying. The problem is probably time limits for projects, also it has to attract the types of players that don''t want to just go around fighting all day.

I just thought I'd throw this link out there. It's an online RPG in the works, and IMO they're doing a lot of things right.

*nods* Exactly. Much of this stuff is not difficult to do.

Obviously, letting a player do _anything_ is dangerous; but giving them simple tools to: build areas, conduct massive battles, be affected by weather, having variable sea conditions, etc.

This is fairly simple: Muds now allow this in lots of cases (only a few I''ve seen actually let players build areas, but some do).

Since all an MMORPG _is_, is basically a mud with a front-end GUI, I cant see the problem.

Nb. Yeah; majik is a cool thing where they seem to have the right idea. =)

...as for real time user control... hrm... a bit iffy. You have to have such a low latency itd be god like to be able to do that. I cant imagine it happening for a MMORPG...but hey, you can do it. Look at draken, etc. You have basically total character control.

Anyway,
My $0.02.
Yeah, it seems that the kinds of stuff we're suggesting here would not be much more difficult for someone to do. I think the reason why online RPGs end up just being a bunch of running around killing monsters and leveling, is because that is more commercial popular. The average part-time gamer doesn't want anything too cerebral(sp?). The ppl who develop games like EQ want to appeal to the masses so they can make more money plus online RPGs are pretty expensive to run I would guess. That is why a game like Majik can afford to be unconventional because they are non-profit....

Actually, this is old news

If you head over to www.betazine.com and look under the adventure/rpg section, there are tons of games that will never hit the light of day in terms of shelf space, which cater to the ideas mentioned, plus.

another that comes to mind... shadowbane. That looks like a clean winner.
