3D UV generation

I was wondering if there was a fast way to generate UV coordanants on the fly by useing the 3d coods of any vert in a poly, I want this so I can have a texture overlayed over another(an energy effect) without useing the same UVs as the base texture (and without haveing to make them by hand or precalculated though the second of these would be OK I guess) so despite the scale/orientation/location of the base texture the overlay texture would have the same general density over the surface of the model, and have a seamless apearence
