How to lie successfully

Why am I never allowed to chose the middle ground?

1) makes you look (or at least feel) suspicious, while 2) gives you great opportunities to blow your own cover. Unless you change the subject.

Talk as much as you normally do, but lie as little as possible. The truth is easier to remember and easier to say naturally. The more you lie, the more likely you''ll make a mistake.

Talk little and avoid conversation. and remember everything you said and don''t answer too quicly to questions, take time to think while you fake beeing distracted. I rule at lying.

Don''t say anything at all, people that arn''t lying don''t feel the need to explain themselves.

Yes, it seems that most people (including me) find the first option (talk as little as possible) the most intuitive one, the rationale behind it being ofcourse that with too much babble youre bound to give yourself away by contradicting yourself.

Well, the human mind is a puzzle, and the answer to this is infact that we have a much harder time to spot a liar who talk very much, than a liar who talk very little.

Why is that?

Don't try to talk as little as possible or as much as possible. Just get your story worked out as completely as you can, but be sure not to rehearse it or anything. Then make eye contact and give as brief a sketch of your story as you can while providing all the relevant details, unless you're a really talkative person who usually bores people to death with every last detail of your life.

Most importantly, don't get flustered, and DON'T get angry or defensive.

Sometimes you can''t talk at all. For instance, if you''re captured by nazis or other mean mofos that don''t speak your native tongue, then you have to STFU or else they''ll go "IKKKKE SHOTE HEM!!!" and your dead. So sometimes you can''t talk at all besides this (a grunt), "ERRRRMT." And they''ll just think your tired of there crap and they''ll leave you alone. Examples of this working are in Indiana Jones (where he goes to Berlin), A Bridge To Far (where the non-german-speaking Americans had to pose as germins with minimal words), and 7 Years in Tibet (where one had to pose as a guard), which is one of my PERSONAL favorites btw.

This is the time where you wanna talk your little heart out, even though you dead, mothaf***er.

Talk a little, and look uneasy, as if you're searching for the right words. As often as not, the person you're talking to will fill in the gaps for you, and you just have to agree. The best part is that because they've thought of half the story themselves, they find it perfectly believable.

Edit 2: Also, once they've given you your story, expand on it a bit, rephrase it, and feed it back to them.

Edit: Of course, it depends on what you're trying to lie about, and what the person you're lying to is like; there are a few people who can hold out for ages without filling anything in themselves.

It depends why I''m lying. If I''m lying to make somebody believe a specific thing, I''d say as little as possible. If I''m trying to make them believe anything but the truth, I''d talk a lot, say whats true but exaggerate just enough to make it sound false, and insert a few inconsistencies to make it ''an obvious coverup''
