I am reading a book about loading models through .X files and I want to find out how to make a .X file manually, I understand that it is alot of work. Can you recommend any resources to help me. I don''t want to purchase any software for now since I am a beginner and if I buy one now it will probably come out with like 50 new versions, so I''m trying to keep it on the free side...

Personally, I use gameSpace $300; but you can buy MilkShape 3D for around $20.00. It will be muhc beter than doing it by hand; here is the link.

you know that you can download free exporters off Microsoft for 3dStudioMax and Maya right? (i know these packages aren''t free) just making sure you know about that too

Note that it''s easier to just use the Microsoft models to get all your graphics, physics, and gameplay working, and then go for pay-for-ware if you actually make something that works. Or, perhaps, write your own tool at the end. Using stand-in content saves SOO much time.

Are you talking about creating 3D models in some app which save in x format?

If so checkout anim8or, its free has a great forum and is very easy to use. I create my 3D models with it then convert to x format and import into my DX apps.

You could also try using Deep Explore - It''s a 3d mesh viewer/converter, they have a free trial version that will export .x files. The exported X file is a bit messy compared to other exporters but...
