It would be nice if you could place something (JPanel) in the left over space of a JTabbedPane (the space beside/above the tabs depending on horizontal/vertical layout). Especially in a full screen application, the wasted space can becomes large. In case there is no way of using that space, the unappealing alternative is then to use JToggleButtons and coding the switching yourself not using any JTabbedPane? Get the frames (or whatevers) Graphics and draw on it.
