69.198.170.218/cell/index.wml I'm leaving my server running for the day and have decided to let anyone who wants it have a copy of 'Tank Commander', my 3D Tank game. Tank Commander is 'market ready', in that it is a full-blown game, polished and the like, ready to ship.. I'm giving it away though. DOn't ask. lol. Go to: 69.198.170.218/cell/index.wml and you'll get a list of builds. This game will run on nearly any phone, and it runs quite fast. If there is enough interest in the game I will release the source code (as open source or something). Cheers, Will

Hey Will!

What happened? Somebody own the IP to tank Commander?

Its a good polished game and should have no trouble selling? Even for about 1000 dollars straight off!

I said 'Dont ask!'. :) lol

I was in talks with a company about distributing it but the deal soured. I'm really not in the mood to try and sell it anymore, and it's a shame to have it just sitting on my hard-drive...

Will

P.S. If anyone wants to buy the code for $1000 dollars please do not hesitate to contact me. Woody gets a $50 'finders fee'. :)

No comments? I know it's been downloaded. :)

Hey, looks great, and pretty advanced!
Why is it "confidential", and why "don't ask?"

And sorry, but this is not "market ready"... (what, no full screen?)

It also has no sound on my SonyEricsson K700i (failing sound is a biggie in my eyes!), and the fonts in the loading screen are squished.

The score at the top left corner of the screen is cut off.

And why the hell do you support Series30? Even Series40 is gradually becoming extinct these days. Ouch :)
Thanks for the feedback. :) I should have said 'this program _was_ ready for release'. :D

The program is over a year old. It was written back when black and white Nokias were the norm (in N. America anyway). In order to get a distro agreement with anybody support for Nokia 30's and 40's was almost mandatory.

Most of your complaints stem from the fact that the target devices for this game would typically only accept tiny binaries (32k ish), had very small screens, sometimes no colour, no sound, buggy fonts, and very limited processing power.

It's marked confidential because I was giving demos to other companies, and didn't want to see a reverse-engineered version of my game (or a derivitive) go to market. An ounce of prevention = a pound of cure. I figured I could use the same 3D engine to pump out a bunch of other games, since the underlying engine is quite unique. You wouldn't believe the crazy things I had to do to get a decent frame rate (back then anyway).

The reason you're not hearing sound is because there is none! Sound was not normal circa early 2004.

The font in the loading screen is not even a font-- it's a vector based image. I'm surpised you see it as 'squished'. What is the aspect ratio for your phones display??

The busted score is probably another font issue. A separate build would probably be needed for your phone. Which version did you download?

If I were to write a game for newer phones it would not be wire frame. :)

Initially I was planning on writing a 3D shooter, using a hacked form of ray casting (no line-line intersection tests). The game you see started out as a test of my trig functions.. Then I found out how terrible MIDP and cellphones really were... lol.

Thanks for your feed-back.

P.S. What do you think of the enemy tank AI? :D

Wow! Nice! It runs very nicely on my phone (6230 - I'm using the Nokia 30 build).
*shameless plug*
I wrote a basic flat-filled non-shaded 3D engine ages ago (as the first Java code I ever wrote, and with very little idea on how to do any sort of 3D). It's unthrottled, so find an old phone [smile]

I tried downloading it from your site but got 500:Internal server error.

I'd love to see how it runs on a T720. :) I found the biggest bottleneck in my program was from drawline. (crazy.... no screen buffer access and the drawline function is a CPU pig).

Your screens look good though.

That's odd... I just tried connecting and it worked fine.
Yes - drawline is a pig. I didn't want to do anything device specific, you see, so just went for a straight J2ME/MIDP1 project.
