I need help drawing characters. I went to this character drawing tutorial, and most of my characters come out in one pose, and look tooo cartoonish. I need to learn how to draw because i am doing sketches for my gaming studio. Can anyone help? Ferrett Ferrett www.shogunmod.com

Maybe I can help... It depends on the characters though.
We are the knights who say "Nee!" -Knights Who say NeeMonty Python and the quest for the holy grail.
I need to know how to sketch modern warfare characters.

REference, reference and more reference. That''s all you need.
Look for magazines, history books for kids (because of the illustrations), look on the net. Look for soldiers, insignas, vehicles, anything that can be copied so you can train your skills, while doing the intended work.
Now go on and start researching !!!

Learning to sketch freely, rather than trying to get everything right the first time, is a good thing. Drawing from life can help a lot. A good book on figure drawing and proportions can, too. Other than that... just be prepared to draw lots and lots of really awful-looking people, before you get to the point where you can sit down and draw and actually have it come out like you wanted. You''re not going to get instant results, but stubborness does pay off in the long run.

Good luck.
We learn to draw by reference. Study books on animals, body builders, etc. Draw what you see outside your bedroom window. Draw it all. Alsome computer art isn''t from the drawing. Most of the time the drawing is pretty clean and simple, using the power of say Photoshop, you color and shadow your image adding tons of detail. Zooming in you can focus on more defined areas. Search tutorials on anime drawing, its a very easy way to draw. Search tutorials on skinning, most of the time skin sites have good tutorials on photoshop and things. Mainly practice and don''t try to get ur pictures to be 100% perfect. If any artist could say his image came out exactly the way he wanted he would be lying.

Would you (or anyone else) recommend to practice drawing lots of figures made out of rounded boxes and cylinders, or actually doing a whole detailed person. I mean, getting the proportions (the cylinders part) is hard, and if that part already sucks, should you keep on and do the whole rendered figure or keep practicing cylinders till you get those proportions right, then move onto fully detailed figures. I hope my question makes sense, i just realized I made like an 8 line long sentence . Thanks.

How do you think we do it in the Fine Arts ?

You start with cones, balls, cubes and the like.
This teach you how to make perspective, lighting, etc.
Then go with more and more varied object, until you actually do still nature (I am not sure of the term in english), like a table with stuff on it.
This also teach you about composition, and other various BASIC techniques that any proper artist should know (funny, I sound like my teachers now ...)
Look at beginners book on drawing. It''s all explained very well.

area there any books you recommend. I have one called "How to draw what you see", it''s pretty good, but I think some things aren''t explained well enough.

Books I recommend are the Dynamic Figure drawing by Burne Hogart (his name sounds like that anyway...) and the rest of the "dynamic" series... especially the ones one clothing, wrinkles and drapery...

For more cartoon style I suggest you go look at www.polykarbon.com, great tutorials there (anime)
