Most memorable acting in movies

What do you think have been the best acting jobs done in movies? What actor did a really good job with their character? I'm not a fan of John Travolta, but in Pulp Fiction he did an awesome job. Normally I like action in my movies, but I was happy just watching him and his character talk. He oozed a cool style that makes me realize how boring I must seem. In JFK, Joe Pesci gave a great performance. He really made his character, uhh...I'm not quite sure what word I'm looking for. But he did a good job. I've only seen part of The Godfather, but from what I saw, Al Pacino was good. At the part where I first saw him he seemed happy and such, but you see a clear change when gets more responsibilities. Those are what I've found the most memorable so far.

When I saw Mask, i thought Cher acted really good. great film and acting b.t.w.

Perhaps some of you won't include him in your list of all-time greatest actors, but one of the most memorable performances I can think of is Johnny Depp in Pirates.

Robert De Niro did a great job in Raging Bull and Bill Murray had a wonderful performance in Lost In Translation.

Speaking of Robert De Niro, and in addtion, Val Kilmer and Al Pacino I thought were great in HEAT.

And I strongly agree with Fibonacci One on Depp, I loved that movie.

Last but not least, Denzel Washington in Training Day, John Q, and many other movies.
I thought Samuel Jackson was outstanding in the Negotiator and in Pulp Fiction as well.

Many more of course, but those are the ones that come to mind.

Edward Norton - Primal Fear, American History X, Fight Club
Russel Crowe - Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man

For a comedian I think Jim Carey has really done some great work ie Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Man on the Moon, Ace Ventura, etc

Nick Nolte was good in Affliction, probably because he lived the part. He was also great in 48 Hours, one of the few white guy/black guy comedy/action/dramas I really like.

Also, you gotta give it up for Stallone in Rocky - I mean, come on.

Travolta in Phenomenon.

Duvall in Days of Thunder. <- yes, definitely Duvall.

Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting. That role required such a versatile actor, and he pulled it off so well. There was humor, anger, sorrow, love, confidence, insecurity...such a great performance.

Depp in 'Pirates'.
Michael Caine - not for a particular film but for the very wide range of roles he's managed to be believeable in; no 'type' at all which is very impressive.
Russel Crowe - 'Gladiator' , 'A beautiful Mind.'
Paul Newman & Robert Redford - 'The Sting' , 'Butch Cassidy'

I'll second Edward Norton for 'Primal Fear'

Willem DaFoe, Boondock Saints. I don't think anyone else could have pulled off the Smecker character nearly as well. I'll put in another vote for Edward Norton in Fight Club, too.

The "acting" in Star Wars Episode III was pretty memorable, but mostly because it sucked.

Practically any Robert De Niro performance.

Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie and many other Hoffman performances (Dog Day Afternoon, The Graduate, etc.).

Montgomery Clift in "A Place in the Sun".

All the actors in "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Henry Fonda in "Grapes of Wrath".

Fred MacMurray in "Double Indemnity" (he went way against type for this one).

Jimmy Stewart in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington".

I guess that's enough. [smile]
