I saw the Godfather trilogy for the first time recently. Absolutely amazing. And it kills a bunch of time (3movies times 3 hours).

Edit: The Great escape is a good classic too, very cool.

Except the first hour or so of Godfather III is absolutely terrible. And the rest of it is not up to par either. But I & II are very, very good.

I'll recommend:

Underrated David Mamet-penned spy thrillers: Spartan & Ronin.

Vietnam flick that rises above its subject matter to universal themes: Apocalypse Now

Anime parable of Ecology and Technology: Princess Mononoke

Hilarious coming of age flick: Rushmore

Trippy, terrifying, misunderstood, great: Eyes Wide Shut. (hint: it's not supposed to turn you on)

I really liked Walk the Line, but I think that was because the theater sound was so good. I wouldn't recommend watching without great sound.

Getting my European cred: Zentropa, a film about Nazis in hiding after WWII.

If you like 3-hour silent biopics: Abel Gance's Napolean (some of his editing techniques are popping up in modern films)
